Non FAI contributions to Aeromodelling

"We're talking different languages dave, "plane" and simple. The blanket laid was that competition, specifically FAI, has/does fuel all the advancement we enjoy today and in the future. It's played its part in some aspects, but absolute?"

What are the non FAI contributions or advancements to aeromodelling?

1. The buddy box for R/C students.

2. R/C flight simulators for R/C students.

Re: Non FAI contributions to Aeromodelling

Are you sure about those Ken? I can see BOTH as tools that might have been first developed for training competition pilots that found a broader home. Honestly I don't know why either was developed, and if you have the history behind them then great. I just don't think you can assume they didn't have 'competition' as the driving force.
(Wild guess - 'buddy box' started as a way to 'slave' a second transmitter and increase the channels available in a complex scale plane and was adapted to its current use)

This is much like computer radios with multiple channel mixing was initially developed for FAI competition - by a Canadian - but quickly filtered into the 'average' radio.

Of course there is always the question of if competition developments were 'natural' progressions that would have happened eventually anyway... something that is near impossible to be conclusive about.

Re: Non FAI contributions to Aeromodelling

CF-100: The real aim of flying for most of us is flying a toy plane in the same manner that a full scale plane might fly. Granted, I do enjoy flying un-scale-like in the gym once in a while. But I have to admit, the real thrill is seeing a small plane look like a full sized one. Tex
