Here is a little optically isolated switch that works well as an engine kill, as well as an onboard glowdriver. You can have a bit of fun, and be satisfied that you made even more of the components on the plane by building this one yourself.

I had never done any electronics work before, and was able to build these very easilly.

Geez, go away for a bit and my post is crammed! Here's my kill switch story.
Go for a flight on my 27% 300 and throttle servo dies. Engine is stuck at half throttle. This is why throttle kill will be used on my Edge! No problem, fly around till it runs out of gas. Thats OK if my Tx alarm wouldn't go off in 15 min. Hovered the plane over the grass and bush till the engine overheated and quit. What I can tell u is that a JR 10 will fly till 8.4 volts.
Laqnded the plane just short of the runway!

Landed the plane just short of the runway!
Jan, I just don't understand this phylosophy.

Wouldn't it be a safer to land your plane deadstick (anyway) under controlled conditions?

Under your scenario you chance running out of either RX battery or TX battery. Why "test" your TX battery to 8.4 volts !!

Also, now you havw overheated your engine and possibly caused sever internal damage to that as well. why do you think it quit? It overheated and ceased up.

At least with an in air throttle kill, independant from the throttle servo, you could set yourself up for a safe deadstick landing and kill the engine when you have determined you will safely make it to the landing strip.

Of course, if you have a glow engine in the 27%-er an "independant" engine kill becomes a problem to engineer.

Have to agree with Bob on this one Jan, that is the perfect time for a kill switch.

Of course, as he says, if your on glow there isn't much choice, except to fly till your out of fuel.

Battery must have been getting awfully low, when you started the last flight?

Sounds like "Just 1 more flight!" syndrome to me.

And it sounds like it almost was.

I think you guys are missing the point......Jan is illustrating what happens if there is no independant kill switch. A gasser will fly for a long long time at half throttle.............

Of course, he was asking for opinions.............

Thanks Nony, you're right. Actually it was a linkage problem now that I remember, not the servo. The engine was a ST 3000 on PRO-SPARK. I would have landed dead stick had my Tx not been so close to the edge. Thats why I was hovering in case she went the plane would not fly far .It was the 3rd flite of the day and I fly my Tx to alarm then field charge or charge at home before I fly again. Done this since I got my 347 10 yrs ago.
Did'nt care what happened to the engine, had a 100 hrs on it.So my point was get an electronic kill switch .
