Replacing Engine's Rear Bearings

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I'm trying to replace the rear bearings in my SportWerks.21 and my Werks TLB7Pro.
both of them are blown and Ive removed all the internals except for the outer ring of the rear bearings...

Q1. How do I remove the ring without damaging the case?

Q2. Do I need a special tool?

Keep your balls in.

Hey Dude,

You need to keep the bearing together (i.e. keep the inner race, balls and outer race as one unit.

You can remove the bearing by flash heating the case to 300 degrees or so (Make sure all o-rings, carb parts etc are removed from block), then tap the block on a wooden cutting board or bench and the bearing should fall out. It may stay in if there is carbon or fuel residue holding it in.

But - the easiest way by far is using a specialty tool like this one...It grips the inside race of the bearing, then acts like a slide hammer or puller to uniformly pull it out. The tool is good for changing bearings at the track if you need to.

Ofna Part#: 10798 for big blocks.

PS - Andrew can get them at Skycraft

keeping the bearing together is a problem, as I opened the case the balls fell out... I think one of them gouged the case where the con-rod travels through... I have tried to heat the case, but I guess I didn't get it hot enough. I'll try again and if it doesn't fall out I call Andrew tomorrow!

Thx alot Nathan!

You really gotta heat that sucker up! Slap the bare block in the ovewn set at 375 and when the engine temps at around 350 pull it out of the oven and give it a good tap on a piece of wood and it'll unseat. Once it's unseated, put the crank through it to straighten the beaing out, then then hit the crank with the heel of your hand and the bearing will pop out. It has to be perfectly aligned in order to get the bearing out of the block.

BTW- I'll have all the bearing tools next week. If you're still stuck, I'll get it out for you!

You have my number right? Call me if you need any help!

regards

use a set of inside verniers like this

or bend up a stiff piece of pipe mounting wire so it is spring loaded to hold onto the lip of the bearing case

i use an old toaster oven, heat the case for a few minutes to about 275 and the bearings fall out with a firm tap on a piece of ply

i use the ofna tools to reinstall bearings on a heated crankcase and to take out stubborn ones

call me at the shop and i can help you out

Dave, those would work great I bet, Im really starting to notice what are THE important tools for nitro RC.

I've just takin' the case out of the oven and hit it a few times against a 2x4, BUT the case has cooled and the bearing is only half way out! I'll try it again! lol
