Just a note.. the John Deere starting fluid has a large quantity of ether in it compared to the other automotive stuff. I'm thinking of trying to use turbine oil in one of these engines at 33% ether-33%kero-33% turbine oil and 2% MEKP. The turbine oil is 100% synthetic. It works real well in Glow engines if you follow the same precautions as using Klotz.

I was led to believe that using ether was very bad for
the motor. Also precautions when using Klotz. Just
what are the precautions?

Ether is a must for a model Diesel at 33%. It requires it for the kerosene to become ignitable under compression. I believe you are refering to using Ether starting fluid on automotive engines. My VW Golf diesel states not to use it 'cause the piston rings will become broken. Also when using Klotz, like any synthetic you must take care not to run the engine too lean. If run to lean, the oil will vaporize and burn leaving no protection. Castor oil doesn't do this. You see with castor, when the engine is really lean, it actually picks up O2 molecules and the oil viscosity actually goes up. The Varnish that builds up in an engine run on fuel with castor oil actually forms a friction barrier to prevent wear somewhat.
