Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

I recently aquired a Ron Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII. Its an older build that has never flown. My plan is to inspect and add some much needed scale detail. The engine is a FPE 4.2 which should be more than enough power.

Re: Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

The DVIII is now home and the inspection process has started. The overall construction is very good but I have found some issues that need to be corrected. All of the Dubro hinges used in the tail feathers have been dowel pinned but not glued, they wiggle around, and the R elevator has some internal damage. I will remove all of the covering on the stab, elevators, fin and rudder and start fresh. I will be using white Solartex and some scale rib stitching. The elevators were also set up with a dual servo pushrod system. To cut down on some weight I will be converting these to pull/pull via a single servo (5645MG). The rudder is already pull/pull on a 5645MG. The 3 existing 5645MG servos are mounted at the back of the fuse near the tail....any weight loss here will reduce some of the lead that is already mounted on the firewall.

Re: Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

Thanks! Finished off the covering and rib stitching last night. Cut the new slots for the pull/pull cables and started adding the black stripes.

Re: Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

I'm using flat black Behr Ultra Premium latex. This will get a Varathane satin clear cote later. I'm also using Robart 1" control horns with the 4/40 clevis for rudder and elevator halves. I just have to glue and pin the hinges and this part of the job is done! I will be using Dubro large flat hinges with a single steel rod for each of the surfaces. The key here is to have as little gap as possible.......

Oh, very nice! The DVIII is on my bucket list of projects to build. Good luck.

Re: Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

tail feathers are now done! I secured the Dubro hinges with 30 min epoxy and small screws. Painting is now done. Moving in to the linkage now.

Re: Weiss 1/3 Fokker DVIII

Thanks Bill. I've flown the BUSA 1/4 DVIII and it was sure fun to fly.....Not so much if you didn't use rudder in the turns. Moving onto the front hatch/gun/cockpit area. My DVIII had this area lozenge fabric covered, the original was not. I have removed the covering and I will fibergalss and paint this area and give it some detail..... I'm using a great product call Minwax Polycrilic....NO SMELL!! and water clean up. Thanks RC Scale Builder for the great build threads and pictures!

Hey Scott,

How do you find the minwax sands? I heard about using it through other sources and wanted to try it on a large foam p-51 I have. I assume since it's water based it'll be good for foam.
