Best proven gas engine for my new plane

I have purchase the new Hanger .60 p_51 warbird named Cripes A Mighty 3rd.
I need to decide which engine to use in this aircraft. I would like to go with a proven gas engine. I Like Saito 4 stroke and it calls for the Saito FG20 but i see alot of negative information on the forums about this engine. Also, this engine needs to fit in the plane. It will take a Saito 91, 100, 115,125 Nitro also the FG 20 gas.
I need to hear from experience.
Thank you.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

I would stick any of the above mentioned Saitos in it and forget about it, super reliable and a great running engine.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

Hi FA FLY ; 4 strokes are higher maintenance than gasoline engines.

Also gas is much cheaper than 4 stroke nitro.

But nitro has a greater power to weight ratio than gas engines.

I agree with SJrcflyer as well.

Not to sound negative, but what is your experience level? these are questions a person whom has the experience past a trainer and a couple of next level planes a pilot would know. Again not trying to pick but just want you to have the best experience possible.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

I am new at flying RC Planes. I am a member of a club and have purchased a couple of Electric planes so far. This will be my first gas plane i fly. I just want to make the right decision for this P-51D that i bought.
I am going to fly it next year after i have a year under my belt. I also have a KMP Stuka which i will be setting up for next year.
I want to put the best and the most dependable equipment in these planes.

Thank You.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

Try to run a gasser if possible, tuning, cost, setup, and cleanliness are all benefits of gas engines. If it calls for the little four stroke 20cc gasser (fg20), I would wait until that is available and use that. I've seen a few videos of that engine running very strong and if they are as good as the Saito Nitro engines, it will be a really nice piece for a warbird.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

I'm going the other way with this compared to yakityyak. I am a firm believer in keeping things light, especially true for a smaller sized plane. You will appreciate the near half pound savings when it comes time to land the thing. Just looking at basics, the Saito 115 will be 185g lighter than thefg20, plus don't forget to add on an ignition battery to that weight. You will carry (on board) slightly more fuel than a gasser but shouldn't be a half pound more.

Take it for what it is, but I would go glow on that size/type of plane.

Re: Best proven gas engine for my new plane

I dont want to discourage your plans but what is your flying experance as war birds are nice but can be a hand full for a 2nd plane.I remember my second plane being a EZ mustang with 91 surpass good flying plane but a lot more than i was expecting .if this is your first gas plane ,I would stick to something easy flying until i was familiar with the new motors & how they run.a war bird is very unforgiving when the motor quits .and being new to gas their will be growing pains . also most war birds require inverted install . tricky setup. best of luck Roger
