As moo said there are no duties and I have never had a package come with HST charged on it, even up to close to 200 dollars. Technically they could stop every package and bill the HST that you would have to pay at the post office when you pick it up but I guess they just don't have the resources to process every small package that comes through.

A couple 300 dollar packages I have received from the US have arrived at local post office with HST due.

As long as it is not LiPo the shipping is so cheap I just order in small batches and they never get noticed. I always choose "Full Declared Value" when completing order.

Over the past few years i've put in around 10 orders and I haven't had any problems with any of them. Ordered ESCs, batteries, servos, connectors, motors, battery charger and some raw material/odds and ends. All but one of my lipos are going strong. The one had a cell that went bad after a dozen or so cycles. Everything else I've ordered is still running great

As far as taxes/duties go, I claim full value and have been hit with duty charges on occasion. Usually I don't get hit though. Luck of the draw.

still zero duty on toys/hobbies, did you mean sales tax?

No, I've had regular sales tax and duties on an order or two. But those times I had I think a few nut/hex drivers in the order and they classified stuff as "tools" if I remember correctly. It didn't amount to much at all though.
