Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

Ok, it's based on the 1/16 erevo/slash chassis yet it sucks on dirt.... why? I'm sure the erevo and slash are fine... I own and love my 1/10 slash...... Is it a weight distribution problem? Everyone says it sucks but no one truely defines what they should have done different as to weight or the placement of it or the chassis length...... So... What makes this car so bad and can it be fixed??????

Maybe people aren't changing the tires before running on dirt? I don't own one so I can't speak with authority on it.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

Some are, some aren't. Having watched a lot of vids on utube I think part of the problem is too much front end weight making it want to land nose first. One vid had the landing lots of perfect jumps but it was a ramp that forced the front end high making it land flat.....

Its all in the set-up.

Tires would make a big difference. Removing the heavy bumper from the front of the rally would improve the nose down problem. Slightly longer push rods in the suspension would help the travel.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

Keeping in mind that these are 1/16... they aren't going to handle off road anywhere near as capable as 1/10 or 1/8 vehicles will. Just like a 1/10 won't do as well as a 1/5... etc.

Let's face it, with such a short wheel base, small tires and limited suspension travel these things (while fast and fun) are not intended for anything too rough.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

Those 1/16 scale cars are just too low. They have very little ground clearance. It also has slicks (stock tires) which where meant for on road. It would need bigger tires and to be lifted to handle off road conditions.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

I got the tamiya block tires and raised for ground clearance(less than 2cm). Now runs great on rough dirt. Although I have to try really hard not to over steer or it spins out.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

From what I've read dirtdriver tha'ts common to this car on pavement or dirt. On option I came upon tonight driving my slash on a high traction track was that I needed to slow the speed of the steering servo through my controller. Seems some can adjust the speed at which it reacts. How did you raise the ground clearance as this style of chassis is new to me.

Re: Why does the Traxxas 1/16 Rally suck on dirt?

On the threaded shocks, I turned to tighten the springs which raised the car up a little. I don't recommend raising to high, it will cause rolling over to easily.
