Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

I started the hobby with a DX6i, so I never really delved into how the 72MHz technology works.

I have an older PCM1024 Futaba 8UHF-S Radio with an FP-TP-FM 72MHz transmitter module (ch. 36).

What I am I looking for to find a matching receiver?

Is it just finding a 1024 PCM Receiver and then finding a Crystal on Ch 36?

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

You can use any futaba receiver that is dual conversion, if you set the radio to PPM mode, or you can also use HITEC receivers. If you want to use PCM mode, you can use any Futaba PCM 1024 receiver. For either one, you need to find a channel 36 dual conversion chrystal.

If you put a Futaba crystal in a hitec receiver, it will work, and visa versa, but I have read stuff online that says that you're taking you chances doing that, so I have always stayed with brand specific crystals.

I have also had good luck with the Corona synthesized receivers from Hobby King. The don't have specific crystals, they go through a process similar to binding 2.4 radios and receivers.

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

Incidentally, the radio you have was top of the line in it's day. I still use one, and have no plans to stop using it. I also have a DX6i, which is okay, but not as capable as the Futaba, especially since you have the Super version. There is a very good book that you can find on ebay, by Don Edburgh that really goes into depth for programming the Futaba 8u.

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

I just noticed that you have some FASST receivers in the background. You can get a FASST module for that radio, and it will then work with those receivers. You can also get a spektrum module, and use it with all of you spektrum stuff.

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

I just had a look on HK and found this: Corona Synthesized Receiver 72Mhz
I never knew these existed.. thanks for the tip.

(Edit: I sold the FASST module and Rx thinking I would never use the radio)

That's the one, they come in small 4 channel units, 6 channel, 8 channel and 9 channel. The price is good, although you'll get killed right now with converting to US $$. I have used a few of them, and never had any problems.

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

Can confirm that Tx was top of the line with your "S" version having even more features. At one point I had two cover my entire fleet of nitro and electric planes and helis and only sold them due to the need for more channels. Only recommendation would be to hunt down the Don Edberg supplemental manual as he wrote the original for Futaba, but was word limited and could not cover it all. Ended up writing his own and it is invaluable in getting the most out of the system.

As the previous posts noted, any Futaba or compatible receiver will work if on the correct channel and mode.

NOTE: Only Futaba PCM receivers will work with the Tx set to PCM mode. For any other compatible Rx you need to set to PPM.

Futaba uses what is called "Negative Shift" and Hitec gear will work as well, (JR and Airtronics use POS shift so even with the same channel will not communicate). There are also "Auto Shift Detect" receivers that will flip to match either direction. I became a believer in BERG receivers as they were rock solid reliable. They also had several other benefits, ie, smaller, lighter and fully programmable with the PC link. Only negative was they maxed at 7 channels. I have quite a few extras as I am slowly switching to 2.4, although my standard freq was 23 and I sold all my extra crystals last year. You can find their crystals for a very reasonable price:

Some manufacturers such as Sombra Labs and Multiplex came out with synthetic systems in that the channel was programmable and did not require crystals. I had a Sombra at one time and picked up a pair of Multiplex 9 channel receivers to try. Set them to Ch23 but never had the opportunity to try them out.

I will be heading to the London Swap Meet on Sunday and can bring those Multiplex Rx's with me. Send me a PM if interested I should be able to preset them to your Ch 36 so they should be ready to go.

Re: Help finding Futaba 72MHz Receiver

For anyone still on 72 MHz and if 7 channels is enough then the Berg7 is one of , if not the best receiver out there. They have been discontinued due to the popularity of 2.4 but am sure there are still many out there.
