What is control line?

Can somebody break it down for me? I am newish to air-born RC's and I'm trying to understand what this control line stuff means.

Am I right that it's essentially and RC plane with a "string" in place of the Tx/Rx? What kind of controls are available to the pilot?

How long are the lines?I 'm confused by what the advantages/disadvantages are? It seems that you'd just have to stand in spot and spin in circles all day which sounds more dizzying than fun?

Enlighten me!

Re: What is control line?

It is not string but two lengths of braided cable attached to a U shaped handle the pilot holds and the cables go to a bell crank in the aircraft. Only control you have is elevator. Cables are normally at least 30 feet long or more. Aircraft flies in a circle with the pilot standing in the middle and controlling the plane by moving wrist up or down to control the aircraft. Loops, figure eights, inverted flite are all possible with "U" control aircraft. It does take some time to get used to turning in a circle all the time but you do get used to the dizzyness after a little time.
With advanced controls you can also have throttle control but the basic way is to just wait for the gas to run out, aircraft have small tanks so the time is adjusted by the size of the tank. Three to five minutes would be average.
You can search more on line.

Re: What is control line?

You don't just spin around in circles. Doing fig 8's, DOH maneuvers, inverted switch backs and such really break any "monotony". I used to fly control line when I was a kid, it was a lot of fun. With longer line you don't go in cirles as quickly either.

You haven't lived until you are hanging on for dear life to a 65" span Bobcat stunter on 70 foot lines, with an Orwick 64 at full bellow. YEEHAW!

I here you! A few years back I took a spin on a ST 60 power stunter after a 30 yr hiatus. Loved it until the next day when I could not lift my right arm over my head.
Great fun!

Okay guys, before every one gets all sentimental, realize that Control Line is alive and well.
Check out this you tube link, StuntPilot88 is on the west coast and has a bunch of great videos featuring Precision Aerobatics.

Cool, that's about the info I was looking for. I knew it had to be more fun then I initially thought it seemed, sounds like a blast!
