I have a saito fa 80 gk in a. 46 great planes matt Chapman eagle 580, and I have no idea what prop to start with? Something for sport flying with nice vertical. I have a 13/6 on it now but haven't flown it yet. Also do I need to re tune every time I change props?

Re: Saito fa80 prop size?

Im running a 14x6 APC on my FA-80 on a modded kadet senior. I get about 8500rpm.
Yes, retune with each new prop, and use a tach!! If you dont have one, the $40 or so is well worth it in tuning a 4 stroke engine. Your ear just can't do it like a 2 stroke.

Maybe try a 13x8? Different brands of the same size work different too.

APC, 13 X 8.
I ran an old FA80, it loved the APC 13 X 8 on a Senior Telemaster.
Hope this helps,

Re: Saito fa80 prop size?

I flew the 82 on a chapman and found the 14x6 APC suited airbatic flying better then the higher pitch. To each their own though.

Re: Saito fa80 prop size?

The Saito .80 is a little older technology than the .82 so has less horse power. It's the same family as the .65 where as the .82 shares the .56 & .72 genes. I believe it to be a bit more of a stump puller and won't rev quite as good as the .82.

What I'm getting at is it might be happier with the 13 x 8 like Dale suggested.

Re: Saito fa80 prop size?

So would a 13x8 make it a fast plane? I've had a hard time trying to figure out what does what, I know small diameter high pitch is fast and larger diameter small pitch pulls but higher rpm

That is correct. You are at the top end of the recommended engine sizes so unless the plane weighs a ton you should have no trouble getting good vertical. An 8" pitch on a 4 stroke will not be fast like the same pitch on a 2 stroke due to the engine running at a much lower rpm.

Pick up one of each and see which suites your flying style.
