What scale or size of a model are you thinking on building....being big planes, I hope you will build a sizeable model.

Was thinking the same scale as my Arrow which is around 1/16 and a half, this would make the Backfire about 98 " in length which might be too big for my purpose. But twin 90's would work fine.

I also like the Backfire bomber but I find the Blinder more impressive. I started working on a M-50 Myashyshev bomber but I stopped it for now because of other priorities. I also finished a 70 mm EDF Sukhoi Su-15 Flagon which will be flying this summer (see picture).

Re: Anyone ever do a TU-22M Backfire bomber

Just printed the side view out at 1/16th scale, yep, 8' long fuse, twin 90's for sure. The thrust tube exit is virtually the same as the the 90 so lots of static thrust over higher velocity. After all, it's a bomber.
I know I can get 1700 watts out of a Hoaye with a mega setup on 6 cells. On a 7 cell setup, I can get 2200 watts per unit but the amp draw is around 90 amps. Can't remember the amp draw on 6 cells, but, 3400 watts should get it off the ground easily. Just gotta keep it light.

The nose is quite long and slim, so no weight issue there. Actually, I might have to laminate some 1/16 plywood on the sides to strengthen it for the retracts and the forces that will be acting on it.

The main gear is neat, six wheels per side. Figure an order to Hobby King might be in the works, will need 2.5" wheels X 12 plus the dual 2" for the nose gear.

Might start this project in mid-summer as I have a fair bit on my plate as it is.

Re: Anyone ever do a TU-22M Backfire bomber

John,

With it being 1/16th scale and to be powered with twin 90 mm edfs, you got my interest in this build. I have very nice classic 1/144 scale kit of Backfire, I would gladly donate it to this project if it can help with details and shapes. It's un-built yet a very detailed and accurate kit.

Re: Anyone ever do a TU-22M Backfire bomber

I have a fairly large plastic model of the plane as well. This model is planning to be a standoff scale quick build so fine detail isn't in the works. But thank you for the offer.

Re: Anyone ever do a TU-22M Backfire bomber

Printed out the three view top and front view. The fuse width is 12" where I figure the EDF's might get mounted, so there is plenty of room for both of them. Should be nice and stable for taxi purposes as well, it's 17" between the main gears, no tipping over when turning around on the runway.
