Andrew:
I think he was talking about the sudden stop when you forget to pull out of the spin, and hit the ground.!!

Yes, entering spins correctly can be tricky. I was just generalizing. At one of our FF, it was most spins in a minute. I didn't have a fast plane and decided to squeak out a couple of more spins. I got the spins, but also ran out of air. It was a fun plane. Hard to tell but, front of fuse was also snapped in half.

pretty sure I saw that one before... OOPS!

It has happened to allof us I am sure. I put my Astrohog into the most beautifull, allmost completely flattened out spin 3 or 4 years ago. After spinning to 50 or 60 feet, I tried unsucessfully to get out... DOH! With my new Astrohog I dont try flat spins anymore

Allmost lost my AC-2 giant scaler (in my avatar) last summer, got a bit crazy and spun down again, too low for a safe recovery - by the time I stopped it and powered up to fly out, the plane was only 3 or 4 feet off the ground and the crops (canola) snatched the LG! The LG was badly bent but the plane was undamaged. What excitement!!

SPINS

Yep spins are a true art, especially trying to stop them after a certain amount of turns
The best flat spins I ever saw were done by Hanno Prettner of old TOC days. You would swear he had a weight shifting inside of the fuse as the plane transitioned into a falling leaf! Of course with all the 3d stuff out there, one sees this all the time, but back then the first time I saw a video of it we were all totally psyched out by it!!

spins

In judging spins at various pattern contests in the past, we looked for a rotation of the fuselage or rolling over of the wing before the nose dropped below the horizon line. If this happend it indicated a forced entry or probable snap entry into a spin, and as Andrew pointed out, this was an automatic zero. The nose has to fall below horizontal before starting rotation, and the forward airspeed should have dropped to zero. One must practice slowing a plane down and stall it where intended. This is more difficult than it sounds especially when you have strong winds or a high idle.
Practice makes perfect

The trouble with me was somewhat similar. Getting into the spin wasn't the problem, getting out of it ... well after 6 or 7 hours of repairs to the Cap and I had it ready for the London IMAC but it sure intimidated the heck out of me worrying about getting my plane to survive the spin.

I purchased the book a few weeks ago and yes, it is easer said than done!

And I always looked for the nose to drop before I spin, shows what I know. Hmm, more to learn. Flying wrong all these years.
