Identity Crisis

Ok, ok, it's not really a crisis!

I bought this little glider from a flying buddy who got it at an auction. It was sold as a Two by Four but certainly is not. It's much prettier than one of those and a bit smaller too me thinks.

WS is 51" fuse length is 30.5"

It looks like a scratch build as there is no printing on the parts. It most certainly is not an ARF as it is build out of real balsa and was finished in Sig Coverall and dope. The fuse still is but I had to recover the wing after repairing it.

I'm thinking late 70's, early 80's vintage perhaps.

Any ideas?

Re: Identity Crisis

1.5M Widget, or Skeeter. I have one NIB in the Dungeon. Skeeter sounds about right.
To darn hot to move. Just got home from a long day of flying.

Re: Identity Crisis

The Mark Smith 2 channel glider design is a bit bigger: 55.5" wingspan with a 33" long fuselage and had a Selig S3021 airfoil. The model you lucked into has the same wing platform but in addition to being slightly smaller, seems to have a deeper forward fuselage.

I'm almost positive the Skeeter is no longer in production (last made via Dynaflite) 'cause whenever a kit surfaces on the internet from someone's basement it quickly sells for $50 or $60 despite "there being not much to it" and the balsa quality being erratic.

The Skeeter has been modified in various ways, including electrifying it. A fair amount of online postings about peoples' experience. A simple to build, efficient design.

And look here, post number 7; something to sock away onto your computer memory stick when you want to build one:

good luck,

Re: Identity Crisis

Hmmm! Not quite the same. the Skeeter plans show solid sheet tail feathers, mine is built up. It shows sheeted wing leading edge, mine is open. Could be a scratch built with mods I suppose.

Re: Identity Crisis

I had it up on the high start Tuesday, the lift was light and it didn't pick it up as well as my Sig Riser but in stronger lift it will be ok.

I could strip the Sig Coverall off the fuse and tail feathers and recover in light weight iron on to improve it.
