Variometers
What are pilots using currently?
Years ago Picalario Variometers were highly desirable. With all the new telemetry. Is there a tone over system for rate of rise/decent? Graupner. Anyone using their systems? Thank-you in advance. -Dale- 100% free webcam site! | Awesome chicks and it is absolutely free! | Watch free live sex cam - easy as 1-2-3 |

Re: Variometers
I have two glider varios I use
one is a Last1Down by TBS ($125). I get the audio via the videolink (FPV). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5qTA5c8bVM one is a FrSky 'High Precision Vario' sending data to my Taranis ($25). http://www.alofthobbies.com/variomet...precision.html The L1D is more of a true portamento than the FrSky, but it is more of a pita to wire up and use of course. I am totally sold on the Frsky one. The Frsky one is dead easy to setup. The beeps are at distinct pitches, not continuous 'portamento' like the L1D and fullsize glider vario. But they seem accurate enough. However I am having issues with the altitude. I have the radio read out the altitude to me in woman's voice, but it often hangs-up at one altitude for minutes at a time despite a real change in altitude. Still the variometer records the vertical speed changes. There is also telemetry of alt, v speed displayed, but I don't look at that. There is probably a solution for the alt hangup I will download eventually. Frsky in action (not mine) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81LiJiOzXzg An online FPV forum member has developed a DIY variometer using Arduino board. Cost is about $20 or so to DIY. I have not used it. http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread....-Tricks!/page8 I also have a handful of OSD units that feature variometers of varying quality. Best is probably RVOSD with a good baro vario, showing v speed on screen like this: DragonOSD has an even more featured on with the audio beeps, v speed value, and an extending bar graph showing v speed. I have used these two OSD but not for gliders yet. Last edited by bcsaltchucker; 07-30-2014 at 05:08 PM. |

Re: Variometers
Thank-you Scott.
Time to go see my local FPV friend, who is using a FrSky transmitter. Take a look at it's audio. Brodie (local club member) has offered his new (Graupner) transmitter to try. Now to go look into Pro R/C's Vario etc. see if it can tone at me. And, more important how difficult it is for me to understand/program. -Dale- 100% free webcam site! | Awesome chicks and it is absolutely free! | Watch free live sex cam - easy as 1-2-3 |

Re: Variometers
as long as the Frsky is the Taranis. The older module based Frsky is not nearly in the same league as Taranis, which really cleaned up the package, enabled the 16 channels low latency, telemetry built in, and integrated with OpenTx. They have released a host of advanced receivers and simplified sensor network as well. I also use the module Frsky, and it is not what I would call a high end radio module, while I now consider the Taranis a solid competitor with the big boys in most respects.
another note - in that same FPVLab thread, there are a couple guys developing autopilot software to use the vario data and automatically seek and hold thermals. pretty neat. Last edited by bcsaltchucker; 07-30-2014 at 06:03 PM. |

Re: Variometers
Now that is getting into the realm of gadgetry. (coring a thermal). I simply have "wished" for a Variomater for 25 years. Recently I picked up one of my old gliders (2M Electric assist), to entertain at a family gathering. Re-discovered a true love of mine. Gliding.

Re: Variometers
I would be interested in a simple recording vario to install in my nearly completed OLYIII. I don't need telemetry or audio.....just a ironclad method to determine height of the flight after I land. Perhaps that's asking too little with all that's available today.

Re: Variometers
Hmmmm.....I will be driving past Holden tomorrow and back past again next week. Any idea of the make/model of the one you are using?

Re: Variometers
I use RAM3 recording altimeter, very accurate, will record sessions all day and then download to your computer where you can see your graphs of all your entire flights. Great for ALES practice,in conjunction with their CAM unit, where you can see your real climb rate....... Since vario is illegal in any kind of competition , I did not even bother.
Many DLG guys are using it to measure their throw heights also. They use to sell direct but now just through dealers. http://www.espritmodel.com/soaring-c...m-3-w-usb.aspx Wing Shadow is out of business since last year. Dan Last edited by ddruck; 07-30-2014 at 08:42 PM. |
