That chip I got from you (actually, your friend), two questions fer ya. I just had it running (too windy for MY maiden flight today):

Primarily, 1)what brand of retracts are they? There is a BIG leak in the filler valve and I'd like to try to get it replaced from the mfg.

2) the engine runs like SILK. Soooo smooth. Could you ask him what kind of maintenance he did after-run? Did he use after-run after each run? At the end of the season?

It just purrs.

It's a Goldberg Super Chipmunk.

I'll have to check about the retracts but as we had mentioned, my buddy babies his engines.

He always runs out the enginea at the end of the day and if he won't be flying it for more than a week, he uses after run oil generously. He also runs his engines a bit on the rich side, doesn' t get every ounce of power due to that but more than enough to fly the plane at low throttle settings. So it's rare if ever that his engines run lean.

I'll pm you on the retracts

Bob

Then how does he get the after-run in? From what I see, I'd have to take the prop and cowl off every time to get at the intake. Surely, there must be a better way.

I would bet you can use a syringe to input oil into the outflow tube. I've done that one one of mine as well.

What I have was what he does with every engine, like I said he is particular. I'm sure there are some particular tricks depending on each plane.

Nuker, do you think transmission oil is OK to use as after-run oil?
I just started with 4-stokes and want this motor to be with me for a long time...
By the way, that chip looks and runs very well!
Dammit, I want one

In all honesty I've seen that Marvel Mystery Oil, tranny oil, Engine Storage Spray from Crappy tire etc etc but the $4 Hobbico bottle lasts an entire season so I stick with the original stuff. Just a personal preference.

Voyager,

ok, the retracts are Spring Air. They hadn't been used in about a year. Casey suggests first that you put some very light machine oil (like sewing machine oil) into the valve as the gasket may have hardened. Put in a few drops, let it sit a bit then try working it through. Chances are that is your leak issue.

The mystery of the after run and the chipmunk; he removes the glow plug, puts the oil in there, and turns the engine over by hand a few times. He also hangs the planes nose down.

OF COURSE ! I should of have thought of the glow plug hole. Easy and accessable.

I tried 2 drops of light sewing machine oil in the intake hole. All it seemed to do was allow the air to escape faster

I had read about the 0-ring hardening over time and how some use light oil, silicone grease (mainly for the piston though). I'll try pumping up again and see how long it holds the air now (been a couple of days since I last oiled/pumped/leaked.

Stay tuned.
