GLOW IGNITER

I just got into rc planes and am currently using a d size battery igniter, it is an absolute piece of garbage. I would like a little bit of advice on a good rechargeable igniter.

Thanks

Paul

Re: GLOW IGNITER

A single D cell won't cut it. If you want to use D cells, that's fine but you must wire two cells in parallel and use high quality Duracells to provide the necessary current.
If you want to buy a rechargeable igniter, I recommend one with the meter built in so you can see when it is dying out. Each have advantages and dis advantages. This is why some people use the power panel and a 12 volt Gel cell. Again, you still have a 12 volt cell to re charge.

Re: GLOW IGNITER

You don't specify make or model so cannot say if yours is faulty. I have been using portable heaters for years and almost all use one "C" cell internally to power the glow heater.

The most common failure was battery cell corrosion. You will also see it take an extremely long time to change those with the provided wall wart. A good power panel will have facility to power the glow plug through an adapter and charge your portable heater.

An onboard indicator may be nice, but I found it either facing the wrong way or too stiff to read correctly.

Re: GLOW IGNITER

Just about any rechargeable igniter you can get at your LHS will work great.

Near you, Pinnacle and Advance both sell good ones for about 25 bucks with a charger.

Re: GLOW IGNITER

I recommend getting this and changing the clips to a plug and getting a LIFE battery pack(6.6v) an charge the LIFE pack when it needs it. It will not lose charge over long periods and 6.6V 1000-2000mah pack will last a long time when asked to produce 1.2V .

Re: GLOW IGNITER

I use the rechargeable Thunder Tiger there are different brand names. They work great the one I am using now is 3 yrs old and still packing punch. They are relatively cheap and last for yrs. For sale at your LHS or mail order.

Re: GLOW IGNITER

Get in touch with your local club and ask around. I personally have three spare glow ignitors. Two of my ignitors have 5000 MAH NmHI batteries and last a long time. For about $30.00 you can get a set, ignitor and charger. They work fine. If you get the ignitor that the battery can be changed then those good cells from that de-funked portable drill battery pack can be used to replace the battery.I would suggest that you invest in a power panel for a field box, because a starter is probably your next purchase. I suggest that you get a tachometer and use it to set the peak RPM 300 to 500 RPM on the rich side of peak RPM. Welcome to nitro engines.
