I just bought a YS60FS rear exhaust complete with pipe. It is probably too hot for the average prop ship, soooo what about a fan jet. First of all where can I get a lot of info on this subject? What size fan do I need and where do I get it. Has anyone experimented with multi stage fans? Does anyone know this engine? Is the head pipe suppose to have a weld at the 4" point?

Hi ; Most fans are made for 90 size engines and up. There are some for .45 size engines. The OS91 was the most popular . Bob Violette Models had an engine and fan at one time. www.bvmjets.com

There is also the RAMTEC fan designed for the newer 90+ engines.

The Dynamax & Ramtec are tractor fans. An older fan is the Byron pusher fan. A larger cylinder head was used on this fan.

There are lots of deals out there for ducted fan stuff because many guys are selling it off to go turbine and electric ducted fan. Check out the jet rally at The Bay of Quinte south of Belleville next weekend.

The YS 60 short stroke (the engine you have) is nowhere near a high enough RPM engine for a fan. I had the same thought as you long ago when I had a YS60 rear exhaust. Ducted Fan engines turn in the 22,000 + rpm range, the YS60 on a good day is about 17,000 with a prop, it will never turn a fan that fast. Use the YS on an old school turn around pattern plane like they were designed for and it will be one of your favorite engines ever. Put it in a DF jet and you'll hate the whole entire thing, it will likely never get off the ground.

I doubt you'd find a crank adapter to work with a fan either, and then if you did, I don't think the YS crank would be long enough, you'd probably have a heck of a time with the front mounted carberator as well.
If you want to try ducted fan the best advice I can give you is buy a NEW OS91VRDF and start there, the engine in a ducted fan is probably the most finicky part of the whole airplane, starting with a new engine that is designed for that application is probably the smartest thing you can do in Ducted Fan modelling.
