All for the cost of tunning

Hi

I,ve been assembling a TopFlite Elder kit , and it is near to completion . The engine will be inverted , and it will be a Saito 56 , that I have had for a few years now . This engine was purchased , for this paticular kit , which I have also had for many years ( 4 or 5 ) .

I hate fiddling around at the field , I go to the field to fly , not to do something that might take longer than I antisappated . So what I,ve done is built a test stand , just for this engine . The tank is in the same orietation that it will be in the aircraft . The set-up includes an on board glow driver . This is only because the engine is inverted , and may cause some issuses . On the stand . you will also see a terminal block in the case that the glow deiver lets me down at the field . It has taken me close to 9 hours to construct this stand , and most likely will not be needed for more than half a hour , at most .

I have seen , and read , where modelers have put countless hours , into things that , really don,t do much . I am , by far a perfectionest , But I do like thing to go as perfect as possible , " when there suppose to .

So I figer that I,ve put 9 hours to make sure that things go as " perfect as they can " , " when there suppose to " .

Bottom line ,........... We modelers sure do work hard , to get it right the first time .

Re: All for the cost of tunning

The only thing I see you have done wrong Mike is where you say we modelers work hard.
I work hard every day and it's work but when I get home I get to the shop and relax really hard
Good job Micheal

Re: All for the cost of tunning

And its not useless work cause those 9 hours you put in the shop will reward you the double in flying hours and fun I'm sure. 9 hours its a long day at the field if your plane is not ready to fly.

Re: All for the cost of tunning

Salut MIchel!

Nice work on the stand! I love it for two reasons:

1- Gives me ideas for my own test stand

2- I finally get my answer to the PM I sent you awhile back about regarding the sale of this motor!

Re: All for the cost of tunning

OK So.. how did it run? I'm looking at it & it looks like the tank is too high to me. Shouldn't the carb be about 50% of tank height?

I'm interested because I have an OS 40 FS mounted inverted & having trouble with it loading up on idle! I think that my tank is too high too.

Re: All for the cost of tunning

Hi

Nope ,......................... the tank is exactly 1/16 lower than the center line of the tank . Which is very acceptable . As for how it runs ,............. I,ll let you know this afternoon . Youre questions are exactly , " WHY " , I built the stand . I,m as anxious as you are to know .

Re: All for the cost of tunning

Hi

The purpose of the test stand was for a number of issuses , I wanted to know . The first was to have the engine start after four years on the shelf . The second thing was , it would be the first time , I install A saito , inverted , and wanted to know how it would perform . Also , it was the first time that I installed , " an on board glow igniter " . Working with an APC 12 X 6

Got set-up , primed the engine , checked my end points with the throttle and servo , and turned it over . Two seconds and it started . I let it warm up at high idle for a few minuts , before I started takeing readings . The on board igniter was working only at 1/4 throttle , and lower .

I set my high RPM at 9500 , thats enoegh for me . What was more important to me was the idle . With the igniter , it was a walk ithe park , idle was at 22-2300 RPM , very accepable . The low needle was a little rich , so I turned it down about 1/8 turn , that did it . . But this was with the igniter . I want it down to 22-2300 RPM , without the igniter , with the engine inverted .
So once the engine fire up , the second time I removed the igniter battery . Opp,s ,...... big difference . The lowest idle I was able to keep was about 2500 RPM . IF I didn,t keep up the RPM,s , the engine would only hold for not more than a little more than a minute . I knew the transition was good so I knew the needles were close to beening in ther right place . @500 is too fast , I like the , " put-put " sound of a four stroke . I,ve decided to install the glodriver in the Elder-40 , more weight foe the plane , . This engine is one sweet jewel , I know it has lots of torq , at the lowwer end of the RPM .

YES ,................... The stand was worth the time .

Michel
