Just found this picture on the net. It's a Vickers Viscount.
What is the purpose of the nose?

Hi Ron the extra engine was probaly a test engine experiment by Vickers some companies done these. Saved money on test planes.

Lotsa duct tape holding that engine on! Red Green would be proud!

Seriously though, I wonder how much ballast they would have to carry in the rear of the plane to balance?

i wonder what happens if they have very "large" people at the back of a plane and very "small" at the front

This Vickers Viscount is at the St. Hubert Museum in Québec.

Constructed in the 1950's, the Viscount was the first commercial transport aircraft to use turboprop engines. Between 1953 and 1969, Trans-Canada Airlines/Air Canada had approximately 50 of these aircraft in its fleet. The museum’s aircraft was acquired from Air Canada by Pratt & Whitney Canada for use as an engine flight test bed. For this specific role, a fifth engine (experimental) was fitted to the nose, which explains its truncated look. In 1988, PWC donated this aircraft to the «…Ecole Nationale d’Aérotechnique» located at St.Hubert Airport, which in turn passed it on to the Museum for an indefinite period.

looks like a PT-6 up front..probably not enough to make a difference in a larger plane like the viscount...

Air Trashcan should have been flying Avro Canada Jetliners instead of the Viscounts.

The Jetliners flew in August 10th 1949 and Air Canada canceled their orders.

They could have been a world leader, but politic s& bad management has a way of screwing things all up.

I think someone is doing some digital picture editing and added the engine to the nose.
