Gas to Glow???
Approximately what size glow would equal 30cc in gas engines...It seems to me that I read somewhere where 10cc in gas equals 60 size in glow...would that be a reasonable figure...160 gemini twin equal to 30cc gas??? Please PM your thoughts..Thanks, fellows...

Re: Gas to Glow???
What type of plane?
180=30cc Gemini 160 will be under an 30cc, it's a fourstroke vs 30cc 2 stroke. Depending on the plane, you may need greater displacement for flight performance.

Re: Gas to Glow???
For some reason displacement in Glow engines seem to be commonly measured in cubic inches, Gas engines in cubic centimetres.
Here's a converter" http://www.asknumbers.com/CubicInchT...entimeter.aspx Mike |

Re: Gas to Glow???
For an example I put an Evolution 10cc on my Piper Pawnee 40 and it was way underpowered. I'm not sure if it was that the engine was still in the break-in period but it didn't have nearly the power that my Saito 82 Four Stroke Glow had.
After some reading I found that most of the tests for that Plane/Engine were done at sea-level so that might account for some of the problem. I'm still pretty new to Gas and have a lot to learn yet. Randy |

A screaming .40 developing HP at 11000 - 13000 rpm vs a Gas 10cc maxing out at 10K rpm, but with loads of torque. The .40 will probably use a prop between 10-6 to 11-6 max The 10cc will use a prop like 12-8 ish. The 10cc will generate more torque at a lower rpm to faciliatate this, and generate lots of thrust.

glow has more power than gas single cylinder has more power than twin/multi so..... the multi cylinder aspect of the 160 gemini might offset the power advantage of a glow engine when compared to a single cylinder gas of the same displacement. http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Eng.../Index.htmlhas a good inventory of glow engine magazine reviews, btw. apart from power output, there are other performance and use issues which can often outweigh blunt power output, eg. less vibration in a multi-cylinder engine, etc.

Re: Gas to Glow???
also when considering the power of a engine you should understand that a twin will have less power than a equal sized single. I would say you lose 25% running a twin against the same sized single . also expect to gain 15% power from going to glow. then if I am not mistaken the gemini is a 4 cycle that alone will not have the same power as a same size 2 cycle twin . my guess would be overall you would have 20% less power and a lot more weight if you were to match the gemini with a good powerful 30cc single 2 cycle. but the sound of the 4 cycle would win in my book hands down .

Re: Gas to Glow???
One guy at our club was having trouble burning out glow plugs on every flight and asked for my help. I went over, the engine was burnt black on the outside and I discovered he was running a .61 on a 10 x 6 prop so asked him why. "I have lots of them and want to use them up." was his reply. I offered him two larger props to use but he refused them so I walked away. Nothing I could help him with and later he ranted about what a piece of junk that engine was!
