I started in basic two years ago with a Funtana 90 with a 26 MVVS, was great to start with but was light. I finished the season with an Edge 540 with a 120 glow, once I had help with setting the plane and radio up (thanks Rick) I got a third my next event. Then I ended up with the Great Hobbies and IMAC challenge plane the hanger 9 carden edition Extra 300 for this year, my first 50cc. Like the guy's have said you don't need to start with a 50cc but I sure wish I could have started with one. And yes I need a trailer to go to an event, I just throw it in the back of the truck to go to the field but to travel any distance I rented a trailer for events this year. Definitely get the plane and radio set up, it really will help you out. I dragged the edge 540 out a few weeks back and I set the Extra up the same as the edge and flew it just as well as I was flying the Extra.
I consider myself a newbie yet, but reading through the posts I'm nodding my head in agreement with most everything. I haven't flown many planes either but sure love the Hanger 9 Carden edition Extra 300 and due to an unfortunate mishap I am working on my second one for next year. Hope you enjoy IMAC as much as I do, it's a rush and make a better pilot out of you. Like I hear so many of the guys say, it's the most fun you can have with your cloths on! Welcome aboard and I'm sure you'll love what ever you end up with.

Dave

Re: 50cc Plane Suggestions

I got started again about 9 years ago with a BME Extra 330. It was my first big gasser and I loved it, but it was heavy. Three years ago I got a Pilot SBach in 50cc size. Three pounds lighter and flies better than I do. Much more of an IMAC plane than a 3D plane. It handles Intermediate as long as they don't put upline snaps in the sequence...
I have only 15 deg up and down elevator (lots) 25 deg aileron and that works fine. Balance (without ballast) is absolutely neutral 45 deg inverted up line.
