Superman 2004
Well, I got back home yesterday about 4pm. So how was my first superman?
Well it was good, I had a great time, met some great people and saw some really cool stuff. I left at about 1pm on friday as I had some friends near chicago I wanted to visit so I missed the last couple days, but that's ok as I was getting a little bored just watching. Nothing really cool to report in terms of new stuff, skymaster had some things there of course, BV's new F86 and composite bobcat, but really nothing especially cool. I think the coolest jet there for me was Tom Cooks Firebird. It's big, it's fast, and it's rock solid. The biggest dissappointment for me was the lazy attitude towards safety. Start ups were so poorly addressed it wasn't even funny, I was standing directly behind a kingcat facing away when they started it up. Fires in the grass, grass and crap blowing everywhere. It is amazing that there weren't more accidents. However, having said that, it is a busy event, everyone is in a rush to get in the air it seems. There were not many accidents or crashes for the number of jets there which is good, I just personally thought safety should have been a bit more of a priority. Anyway, here are some of the pics I took at superman I didn't want to post all of them in the thread as there are a lot (92) so here is a link to my upload library for you http://pics.lgmguitars.com/pics/superman/ |

Nah, it wasn't a let down at all, I don't really know what I was expecting to be honest.
But after 4 days of standing around watching jets I'd had enough. Honestly, I was hoping for more variety of jets. Watching Kingcats, Bobcats, and Bandits dominate the sky gets old really fast. During the 4 days I was there I never even saw an F16 fly LOL!!!! I was disturbed by the starting safety issues honestly, and what really floored me was the amount of grass and dirt they had flying around during starts, if your jet was behind somebody else's, you'd certainly have dirt and grass all over it. Next year I'll drive down and take a jet with me although I'll do my flying on the tuesday wednesday thursday and spend the last 3 days watching. 7 jets in the air at once is stressful to watch. The biggest stress factor I think is when there are 4 bandits all going 200mph, 2 kingcats in the middle flying slow and doing 3D stuff, and a Rookie doing thrust vectored spins. Yeah, it's cool, but not the kind of traffic I'd want to fly in. As for product, I guess I wasn't really expecting to see anything really new and innovative, I think that turbine jet modelling has reached a bit of a plateau at this point. Other than new kits and maybe more composites, I don't think much is going to change anytime soon in RC jets. So was I let down? no, not at all Was I bored? yeah, after a while, but then I don't like just sitting on a beach doing nothing either hehehe. Will I go back? Yup |

I am not sure I want to fly with 2 noisy jets doing 200mph flybys, and 4 over my head a the same time either.
I think that when one goes to one of the largset events in North American, one expects to see new things, new breakthroughs etc. However, no major breakthroughs to report this year I guess, it is the same old thing possibly? It was reported that this year Superman was not as well visited as previous years and the AHHH effect was not there. |
