What do I need when switching to 2.4?

I'm probably going to switch from 72 to 2.4 and wonder what all I need to get?

Obviously the radio and receiver (going to be x9303 and the RX??).

I think I've read that the 9303 can use either spektrum or jr 2.4 receiver. Right? Comes with the R921 I believe. I can substitute the AR9000 if i want??

I can just plug the servos I'm using now with 72 into the 921 rx. Is there anything else needed/required while I'm in a buying mood? I'm not talking about power expanders and fancy stuff like that.

I'm using pcm 9ch receiver now with 7 servos, 3 nimh batts. Basically I want to just replace the tx and rx. It's the little things that I don't know (receiver extention? datalogger???-->I'm just throwing out names I've come across while researching).

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these points please.

Re: What do I need when switching to 2.4?

You've pretty much got it! No special requirements, just normal servos plugged in to your 2.4. Datalogger is a "nice to have," I bough one, $25 bucks is cheap for another layer of peace of mind.

The only thing to look at is that your Rx batts never drop below 3.5 Volts at any point during the flight. I would run only 5cell Nimh if the servos can take it, or Lipo/Lion/Regulators or Lifepo4. You can buy small capacitors for $15 or so that plug into your Rx, but I would rather not have to rely on these items, if they even work at all! I've read somewhere that JR says these are for car/truck use only, and not for planes!!

2.4 is awesome, you'll love it!!

Another option to look at is to depending on the current radio you have is to just swap out the module in the back to a 2.4 module. Some resonable ones from Assan and others from www.hobbycity.com. Read the reviews and deside for yourself. The receivers for these other name brand modules are drastilly cheaper the the spectrum and faast ones.

Re: What do I need when switching to 2.4?

swap not an option. I mentioned in another thread that I think it might be either the tx or rx that almost caused me to lose my gasser the other weekend. And the control surfaces were acting up this past weekend in my pre-flight check. At 8 yr old, it's not old by some standards but I have lost confidence in it.

FURTHER:

What's this about satellite receivers? Do I now need two (or three or ??) or is it just a backup redundancy, like having two batteries for the servos?

1 should be fine with most receivers, except the AR9000. I think they encourage 2 or more with that one because the main power bus is not a receiver, you only get reception from the satellites.

On a side note, be sure to go to JR's website to learn how to cut the red wire on the soft switch (if you are going to use it). Apparently it may short out and burn your entire unit if not cut!!

Re: What do I need when switching to 2.4?

No extra stuff required to make the switch. Just change out the receivers. Follow the set up and placement instructions in the manual and they work fine. The data logger is a great addition to get the rx set up in the best postion in the plane with some real feedback. Takes the guesswork out of the picture.
As mentioned already power supply is very important with these units. Good batts that are up to the task are a requirement not a option.

Red face Re: What do I need when switching to 2.4?

Hello BigBreeze:
Where did you you get the info re: the 9000 ? It is my understanding that the the 9000
has two rec. in the main unit plus the satellite, giving you three receivers. I am using mine in a JR 10X. and 10SX. I have talked to JR about a problem with inter-action between the Aileron and Throttle channels. This required the units being sent in for a Firm-ware change, should be back this week.

My apologies, this statement applies to the 9100 Powersafe unit. I'm using the 9000 on 1 receiver with no problems in my 50cc Yak. Sorry again.
