Fantom or Picco?

This is kind of a follow-up on my last post, but I've narrowed down my choices for a T-Maxx engine to either the Fantom .18, or the Picco .21. I know Chewy told me to get the Fantom .18, but I just wanted a few more opinions. My engine isn't in the best shape right now, so I'd like another fairly quickly.

Thanks a LOT!

well i've looked over some reviews and i would go with the Picco .21. Just probably seems dependable and since your engine doesn't have much horsepower it would be a real bonus so i would go with the Picco .21 hey thatz me Evan the idiot lol. Have fun choosing Alex!

You really only have two choices... either go with a dependable japanese engine: OS 18, or go with a nice italian engine, Sirio makes a .23 that will turn your Maxx into a one way missle...

There is a dyno review of the Sirio in this months RC Nitro mag... it has 60% more HP and 100% more torque... nice!

Actually, this month's mag is probably a good read, has 55 small block engine reviews... But if it was me, I'd go with the OS... Cause you won't be wasting time every day re-tuning the needles... And there is always something to be said for reliability!

It would depend on where your getting it from.
I have never seen a phantom at any of the LHS.

I'd go O.S myself, but if you had to choose between the two I'd go picco.
Only because of name..and availability of rebuild parts..etc

Fantom engines are nitorious for being very hard to tune. Most people switch the carbs out of them right away. If there is any question about your tuning skills, stay clear of the Fantom line of engines. They make great power, but tuning can be an issue.

The Siro engines for the Tmaxx run alittle hot. Don't be afraid to let the engine get to 270 - 280, that is just the way they are. They run best at those temps. The Siro makes tons of power. Definately wheelie poppin, wheel spinning, diff stripping, power! LOL!!

I'll tell ya the new Traxxas TXR 2.5R engine is a great engine. It is very inexpensive and makes great power. Don't get me wrong it is definately NOT a .21, but for the money, it is the best in its class of engines. It is very easy to tune, has lots of torque, and is a drop in replacement engine for the Tmaxx.

Just a tip for you, if you do upgrade to a .21 engine. You will also have to upgrade the drive train. From diff gears to drive axles, to tranny gears. The Tmaxx wasn't engineered to handle the torque produced by most .21's. If you don't ugrade the above mentioned, you will spend more time broken than running.
So my advice is stay away from the .21's and get a .18 or the Traxxas TRX 2.5 R.

Well, the Sirio is too expensive and I dont really want to replace much for the Picco, so it's either the OS or the Fantom then.

Well thanks guys.

The sirio is silly expensive at the LHS...if your seriously looking try ebay. Average buy it now is $139US plus shipping which makes it competatively priced..otherwise your right I'd look away.

Haven't seen the O.S on ebay..but great hobbies has it priced right.
