SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hi Group....Recently purchased a used SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub and I'm doing some repairs/restoration. Anyone know where I can get the side and front windshield for this kit? It's a 1/6th sized model. Or are these windows custom made by the builder?

http://www.sigmfg.com/IndexText/SIGRC3.html

Thanks, Stephen

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Pipewr Cub Windows????

If I remember correctly they are cut out of a flat sheet and I think there is a template to copy from the front one . I know that is how the 1/4 scale is for sure but it has been a long time since I did the 1/6.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Hey Dennis....yes I saw the flat sheets on the SIG Website, but no listing for the front windscreen. So that makes sense that they are formed using a template. On your 1/4 scale, was the template a wood/metal device, included in your kit? or was it a paper template, where you then heated the plastic window and bent it freehand? If that's the case, I may be able to do the same here as I have the original front window (still installed) and may be able to heat the new front window stock and form it around the old window.

Thanks for the input.....Stephen.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Stephen. The front windscreen is cut from a flat piece of plastic (Butyl (?)). Then you bend the front curve, then the top curve back equal to the airfoil. The template should be on the plans, trace then cut out your plastic.
My 1/4 scale came with .015 plastic. We used to be able to buy sheets of Butyl from our local hobby shops. Try yours, might have some stashed away.
hope this helps.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Thanks Dale. I don't have the plans in my hand. But did look at SIG's pdf posted online, but there wasn't any reference to the window template, or any reference to the windows at all. From what you remember, did you have to heat the Butyl to form it?

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

No.
The full size windscreen was a sheet plastic bent from side-side. with the top bent over. It all works from a flat sheet.
The 1/6th scale I have never built. But all Cub kits I know of do the same method of shaping. Mind you heat is your friend, but not to the point of shrink, then distortion.
Hope this helps.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

I understand now....The template was for sizing the plastic and achieving the curved portion that meets the fuselage in front of the pilot. Guess that's what I need to be looking for....Thanks Dale.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Just took a look, out of curiosity for SIG's pdf assembly instructions for their 1/4 scale J-3. There's reference to the Windshield installation there, as well as the template for the 1/4 scale Cub http://www.kavanrc.de/instructions/sigrc48cub.pdf .

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Just an update....Was just on the phone with SIG "USA Modeler's Hot Line (For tech support) 641-623-0215". I was told that when you order their replacement front windscreen (SIGRPWD203 WINDSHIELD FOR CLIPWING/J3) for their 1/6 scale J-3 Kit (SIGRC3), it comes precut and no template is available/required, as with their 1/4 scale J-3 Kits, which has the template in the assembly instructions.

Re: SIGRC3 J-3 Piper Cub Windows????

Great to hear.
Sig parts, and replacement parts are available through most local hobby shops. Glen, and Hazel loved having a great working relationship with local hobby shops for oh so many years. It is my understanding the fella's that bought everything Sig, are doing a great job of continuing the Sig way of dealing/working with modellers.
I have had great luck with Great Hobbies here in the west. Hope they are close enough that you might be able to support them, and Sig.
