Not the easiest clutch extraction.

I had a pinion/bearing issue at SHAG that kept me from flying in the afternoon. The pinion gear which is bonded to the upper bearing lost its bond and severely wore the top of the pinion. After a bit of study, it appeared easier to split the helicopter in half rather than trying to drop the engine. This way, when reassembled, it will maintain alignments. Morning surgery was a success, even if it does look ugly.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

I'm just contemplating the gear ratio right now. The original was 6.77:1 (13 tooth pinion). I have a spare kit, the GSR260Z (the one I'm flying is the GSR260Z Sports converted to flybarless). The pinion I have in the spare kit is an 11 tooth providing a 8:1 ratio.

The manual specs suggest a 1450 head speed, which with the 6.77:1 ratio is about 9800 RPM on the Zenoah. I've been running 1600RPM which equates to 10800.

If I change it to 8:1, it will unload the engine to 11600/12800 respectively.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

Finally got around to putting it back together. While this may have looked messier than dropping the engine, I'm convinced this was the way to do it. Every screw dropped into place where it belonged without twisting and wiggling things around and the gear mesh / clutch alignment all fell into place just as I expected. Now if the rain would just go away.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

I really like it. It's incredibly stable and smooth. Super easy to start engine, even after sitting all winter. If it weren't for the fact that it's a rather expensive machine, it would make a great heli to learn on.

Going to start construction of my second kit so I don't run into a situation like I did this year. Kinda sucked at 2:30 on Saturday at SHAG and I was done flying.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

Dave, Good luck with your JR Gasser. Having a back up heli is a good ideal, so you can keep flying when you have an issue with one. My Trex 550E and 700E both got about six flights at SHAG and have been flying every weekend, but this weekend, due to weather. Hopefully, next weekend will be better.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

Yup... gotta have that spare. When I ordered my replacement parts, I also ordered the parts to convert my to be built GSR260Z kit into the GSR260Z flybarless. Won't be able to start that construction until next week though as I am off to Saskatoon this week for work training sessions.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

Well, nothing but rain lately and no chance to fly.... started construction of GSR260Z number two.

Re: Not the easiest clutch extraction.

We had a good day of flying at the Windy Flyers field yesterday. Hopefully we can get out again in a few days.
