Yes you can turn the heading hold off, set it to a toggle switch and have rate and heading hold.

Re: Heading lock Gyro?

I use Futaba 401 and JR 770 3d gyro's , the JR is extremely good.
Where abouts are you compared to someplace that i'd know of ?
Kevin is in Selkirk, Don is in Winnipeg, Jason is in Steinbach, Duane, Carl, Dan are in Kenora and Terry is in Dryden. One day with us and you'd learn a lot.
This gives you an idea of how many heli's are here and a pic of a few of us. Notice a few nitro's and some flybars as well. This is my private field that is setup for heli's and a runway was put in so if you have a plane and want to fly it you are more then welcome to.

Re: Heading lock Gyro?

WOW is all I can say. I am as close to the Sask and US borders as you can get (SW Man). It is about 3.5 hours to Winnipeg from here. What I need to do is plan a trip there for a day or 2 or 4 when you are all out and flying full swing. I have only ever seen 1 other heli when I flew at an airshow in Estevan Sask. A fella from Brandon was there with his Jet Ranger. I flew low and he flew high so I didn't really see him fly much.
And if I can turn it on and off then I should want a H/H gyro.

I know this is a bit off topic, however I have a bunch of Nexus 30 parts if you ever need any.

Not off topic at all. Any time I talk RC, parts could be a topic! Lol
Could you send me a PM with a list or pics of what you have, Keeping this old fleet up and running isn't getting easier.

Re: Heading lock Gyro?

Don't forget you can select rate or HH after you initialize, but it has to do so in HH mode.

Re: Heading lock Gyro?

When you referred to reading the set up info, did you mean this one I wrote a while ago:

https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=123644

I describe initialization and with HH gyros it has to be powered up with your Tx set to the HH side of neutral. With the 401 it will not complete that step unless it is.

It is only AFTER it finishes can you then select RATE if you want that mode, or stay in HH. I also posted a little hint to cover the drift that can happen, especially if the unit has not been temp normalized to the flying environment first. With it still powered up you can quickly flip back and forth from RATE and HH, and if you finish after a few quick flips back on HH it should be recentered and hold true again.

Good stuff Gary. I am starting to understand a bit more now and I just need to do a few things with my tx (shut off throttle mix, reduce both ATV's on cha 5 to 50% and centre trim if I am following correct?).
Now my next question is. You had stated in the thread that it will not matter where I install the gyro. It was located in the usual bay behind the mast. If I install it there I will not be able to see the LED at start up or make any adjustments to the pot's. Is this important to see or? Once I have set this thing up I should't have to mess with it again?

Re: Heading lock Gyro?

Most seem to have it on a pad behind the main mast. Not a problem if you follow a couple of instructions. Along with a good isolation pad you want to ensure no tension on the leads as that can transmit vibes to the gyro.

Second is a good balance of the tail rotor. Any vibrations generated by that will go up the boom to the frame, usually right below that mounting pad. I found a simple visual test is to watch the horizontal stab. If the ends get blurry at speed the tail is setting up a resonance. On quite a few less sophisticated clones the cause was inaccurate machining of the tail rotor grips resulting in differences in tail rotor bolt distances from center. The same can result from slop between the hub and tail shaft where tightening the set screw throws the centerline off.

I would recommend trying to see the light. Not so important if you have your Tx set up so it initializes in HH mode, but you need to check for the end of that sequence before flying. That will be shown in the light status and it needs to finish before the gyro can function.

The ATV pot can be used for initial set up to prevent binding of the linkage, (you want to adjust the servo position so that ATV just reaches physical limits both directions) and the delay pot can be "Tweaked" to minimize bounce when the gyro commanded heading change reaches the desired amount, (tail wag). That adjustment is there to compensate for different servo speeds so once adjusted should not need to be touched again.

Thing is I don't remember if that is shut down if the remote gain is receiving a signal. Lots of gyros disable that when you have it plugged in. Been a while.
