Great Planes F4U Corsair .40 Building Thread

Well, I decided today would be a good time to clear off the work bench and start the kit I bought off RCC earlier last year. I was skimming through the manual and it looks like it will go together pretty quickly. This will be my 4th kit. Since I have lots of red and white covering left over from other projects I'm going to cover this plane in the number 57 reno racer scheme. I will post pics and building progress in this thread.

Wow, it looks like this kit is going to go together quickly. I worked on it for a bit this evening and have the fin, rudder, elevator, and stab put together, and Did some of the rib and wing center section laminating/doubling. Tomorrow I should have the center section framed up, we will see.

I have a few questions. When is it alright to substitute wood glue for ca or epoxy? So far Ive used the wood glue to glue the solid balsa parts for the stab and rudder together, and to laminate a few ribs and part of the wing center section.

Also, here is what I am planning for set up. Saito .72 for power. This will be my first 4 stroke. Then, as usual, since its a .40 size plane I will buy another hitec universal flight pack and use hs-425bb servos all round.

Use wood glue everywhere except for where epoxy is called for.
Don't substitute wood glue for epoxy.

Wouldn't wood glue add too much weight without enough strenght? I would think thick CA would be better.

Posts on another site tested yellow glue vs ca--no discernable difference in weight.

As for using glue vs epoxy--it is always recommended to use epoxy not glue when called for, especially on fw.

Having said that, any breaks I've had (and I'm sure we've all had our share), on glued wood shows that the wood breaks before the joint breaks.

Use poxy when called for. Substitute yellow glue for any other ap (other than where you need "quick" hold).

If it were me, I'd cyano most of the joints...Quick and easy and light.
Why wait around for the glue to dry when you don't have to.

There are lots of reasons why someone may not wish to use CA, if he wants to use regular glue it is not a problem.

Personally, I use a lot of CA, but I know that I am building up a sensitivity to it and won't be able to use it forever.
Also, my wife calls down to the shop to give me heck when the CA fumes start wafting upstairs.
