Assembly Thread - 50cc Top Dawg Edge540

I decided it was time for a new 50cc bird to add to my hangar

After doing a bunch of research, I was down to the 3D Hobbyshop birds or Blaine Austin's new line of 50cc planes from Top Dawg Aviation!! I decided to go with Top Dawg's 92" Edge 540, since the purpose of this plane is 3D

http://www.topdawgaviation.com/50CCE...0CCEdge540.php

I also ordered a DA60 with DA muffler along with (5) Hitec 7955 servos and an A123 pack

Blaine was nice enough to throw in a hat and T-shirt for some shameless advertising up here!

This plane is HUGE for a 50cc class - 92" Wingspan

Re: Assembly Thread - 50cc Top Dawg Edge540

The covering job on this plane is simply amazing.. incredible detail, very precise job and NOT A WRINKLE

The wings are built-up, and very cool aileron Nubbies and very impressive wing tips that are not plastic - they are part of the wing and are built-up.

Re: Assembly Thread - 50cc Top Dawg Edge540

And the stabs!!

Nice little Nubbies as well !! If you look at the root, it is laminated with a thickness of G10 for more strength - interesting design!

The kit comes with CF wing and stab tubes

I also spent the extra $80.00 and bought the graphics package!!

Re: Assembly Thread - 50cc Top Dawg Edge540

Some small stuff.

Everything is predrilled and the blind-nuts are already installed in the cowl ring and wheel pants. The only hinges that need gluing is the rudder... all the rest are preglued!!

I love the cowl with the scale intake like the RedBull Edges!!!!

Re: Assembly Thread - 50cc Top Dawg Edge540

And a very cool fuse design and paint-job on the hatch/canopy!!

A few notable things in the fuse are:
* foam belly pan!
* pull-pull installed
* motorbox very well reinforced and covered
* there are (4) carbon longerons down the full length of the fuse for stiffness.
* this thing is light!!!!

One thing I did notice is that the tunnel is only long enough for a canister (not a pipe)... this isn't a problem for me, since I'll be just putting a muffler on the DA60, but perhaps an oversight!

Also, the hardware is metric and not socket-head caps, which Blaine told me was an oversight on his part for the first shipment... the newer 128" lineup coming out soon will all be proper hardware.

This is gonna be fun - looks like there's honestly only about 2 nights worth of work here to have it flyable!!!

Looks awesome Trev, finally a nice well built Edge I can afford for one of my electric setups. I like the idea of the Styrofoam belly panels my Sebart Sukhoi is like that. The shipping costs at $116.00 are great.

Yep... really well built!! Like many people, I've put together a ton of ARFs and it always boggles my mind how little glue some have holding them together - especially on the interlocking ply parts. This ARF is very reassuring because you can see a strange white-tinted glue around the seams - almost like a hazy epoxy. There'll be no joints coming loose here!

Also - the covering job has to be seen to be appreciated - a very nice job with a ton of detail.... and I've yet to have to touch the iron or heat gun to any of this plane - 0 wrinkles and 0 edges peeling!

Trev
