Saito vs OS

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Can't decide what manufacture to go with for a four stroke.
I have heard that both run and sound great, are easy to setup and maintain. I have also heard the following:

Saito

1) Leaks all kinds of oil and are messier than the OS
2) Uses way more fuel that comparable OS
3) Has more hp and less weight than comparable OS

Can anyone who has both confirm these rumours

I don't really care which manufacture is better as I will buy either, I would just like to know if the rumours are true.

Thanks

four strokes

I have 2 Saito's ( 56, 100 ) both run great, do not require continual atention and definately do not leak anywhere, and are very good on fuel. They are both terrific engines. I have no experience with O S four strokes. Ken.

Hello; i have 20 or more Saito's and only 9 OS four strokes. They all run so well that I can't complain about either make. It's teh old Ford versus Chevy arguement. Whichever you decide on will give you years of good service, with very little problems. I prefer Saito, I like their one piece head barrel design. Neither leaks all kinds of oil.

Have had 5 OS 4 strokes and 4 Saitos... like em both, and none have "excess oil" leakage issues.

Today, if buying new I would have to say Saito, but only due to my preference for the design, and perhaps a little lighter depending upon the displacement.

But I would not hesitate to buy an OS 4 stroke either, especially if used and a good price.

Ditto on Andrew's statement. I have used OS in the past as well as Saito. I now have only Saito 4 strokes and I like the design and dependability! I too would not hesitate buying OS but I do perfer Saito!

I hope the info you receive on such things is from a dependable sorce. You will find that just about everyone has opinions on their choice of engines and tend to dismiss the good qualities of other makes, perhaps even making statements like " I've heard that they leak a lot of oil leaving quite a mess all around!" When you need comparrison info on such things, it would be best to talk to folks who have a good working knowledge of the various types of equipment they use and can give an unbiased report on such! To do otherwise would not be helping you and is truly unfair to other good makers of the same type of equipment!

Again, I would like to make this clear....my preference is based souly on my personal likes and does not reflect negatively in any way on OS engines! I happen to be able to get the best deals on Saitos and I like the looks and designs better, in my opinion only!

My buddy put a Saito 100 in his Funtana a few weeks ago. Loads of pulling power; though he has fun flying it real slow. He had this engine in an Ultrastick with the same results. More power than the .91 but still fits inside the plane.

What kind of feedback did you want?

Bob

I just purchased a Saito 100 GK for my Ultra Stick. I haven't run it yet but knowing Saito engines, it should be a great engine.

A fellow in the club bought one and he liked it so much he purchased a second one and they both perform just fantastic. The 100 has a slightly longer cylender than the 91 but is basically the same size and weight with a nice bit more power. It should fit in any size plane that would take the 91 no problem!

And my personal preference as stated in my previous post is for the Saito. I just love them! I know you won't be sorry you bought one!

I have a bunch of both makes. My favourite is the OS 70!

The "oil mess" may be coming from the crankcase vent, which every 4 stroke has. If you use an oil rich fuel (Byrons come to mind..) then you are going to have a mess. Some of the newer OS designs cycle the crank case vent back into the intake manifold, so it burns away...

I don't notice any difference in fuel consumption between the two..

The Saito is lighter, definitely, however the difference is not that great.

The oil mess rumour may come from the fact that some of the early Saito 100's came poorly adjusted from the factory, the low end needle was set far too rich, causing fuel to back-up out the carb.
After setting properly, the engines ran perfect.
I don't know if this has been corrected on later models.
