Guys,

Is it alright to solder wires to your servos to extend the leads or should proper extensions be used

extensions

I know of people who will make the extensions longer by soldering a peice of servo wire into them. My opinion is extensions are not that expensive so why risk it.

extension cords

use proper extensions, which you can make yourself - get the parts from Radical R/C or similar.
Don't cut your servo leads, this will void your warranty, especially important with Hi-tech and their two year warranty.

It can, and has been done successfully, however, what if you want to move your servos over to another plane??? Using extensions is neater, and you keep your options open for futre projects.....

Is it worth crashing this plane to save $5.00 - $20.00?

If you kick ass at soldering than it may be. I suck at soldiering so for me, I would rather spend the the little bit on a factory extension now than to replace the entire plane latter.

So practise. Get a soldering gun/iron/whatever, some resin core (not solid) wire) used for electronics, not plumbing, gotta have some wire kicking around and try it.

Once done, try to pull it apart. The original wire will probably separate before your soldered joint does.

yup and it will break right at the end of the solder joint.......

I think there would be a market if mfrs offered servos with 24 or 36" leads...
