Ontario Herr Engineering Cloud ranger build.

I have been looking for a second plane to move to after my HZ Super Cub but I wanted to try a balsa plane . So I went into the hobby store today and had a look to see what kits they have and the choice was very limited .
I had a choice of about three kits and decided on the Cloud Ranger as it gave the options of ailerons and electric power that the others did not .
This will be my first build and I have read several of the tips posted in other threads and they answered most of my questions for now but I am sure I will have lots more as I progress with this kit.
I am curious right now if anyone here has built or flown this plane ? I did a search but it did not seem to give back very much info.
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Herr Engineering Cloud ranger build.

Hey Kevin,

Just noticed that my response that I posted here last week disappeared in the database crash. The kit from Herr that I am building is the Starlite. I am trying to build it super light though, I am hoping to keep it down around 90 grams ready to fly.

So far the build has been pretty straight forward, not quite as much laser cutting as the newer kits such as those from Steven's Aero but still very good kits.

Hey Adam
How is your build going ? I would love to see some pics
I have been fairly happy with this kit so far although the instructions could be a liitle more detailed . The parts seems fairly well done but being my first kit I have nothing to compare them to.

Re: Herr Engineering Cloud ranger build.

+1 Keep it light

Resist the urge to adorn these small models with tons of detail. They are much more enjoyable to fly if kept simple.

My first balsa build was a Herr Mini-Sport. The interlocking parts made assembly very simple.

Good luck on the build!

Thanks Philip my plan is to keep it simple I think if I make too many changes to the plan I probably would mess it up

Kevin,

What do you plan to use for a power system? Servos?

I picked up four of these servos from the hobby shop . I used them to put ailerons on my super cub and they work pretty good . I am new to all this and am looking for any suggestions for electric powered motor,ESC,Battery,Reciever.

Here are a few shots of the plane in its current state . I have almost everything built except the one wing.

Re: Herr Engineering Cloud ranger build.

Yup, the construction is very similar to my Mini-Sport. Looks very good so far!

The stock motor is a speed 400 with a 2.5 gearbox. It weighs in around 3.3oz. You could swap in a similar brushless motor, but it will be much lighter requiring you to adjust the battery location to get the correct CG.

I see the setup recommends an 8x6" prop. For slow flying models I prefer larger props with more thrust. So if you can fit a 9" prop, it would be better. I like HeadsUpRC and recommend them to many ppl. Jeff the owner is a great guy and has excellent service and warranty. Here is a motor that should work very well:

HeadsUpRC Power Up Sport 400

HURC 18A ESC (Re-Branded Hobbywing FunFly)

Use with a GWS 9x5 prop on 2S for 'scale' flight.

You can also bump up to 3S lipo and fit an 8x4 prop for even more speed.

For batteries:

2S 1300mAh

3S 1300mAh

Note: You can get away with a light power system on 2S if you can keep the weight down. I use an even smaller 370 class motor in my ~15oz DHC-2 Beaver and it flies just fine.

Re: Herr Engineering Cloud ranger build.

Thanks those look great and a nice price How is the shipping ?
The hobby shop here quoted a lot more than what those parts come out to . I am trying to keep this as inexpensive as I can considering it is my first kit and a trainer. I will probably build another kit this winter but not sure what yet .

HeadsUpRC used to be $7 flat rate international shipping (USPS/Canada Post). However ever since they reworked their website, the shipping costs went MIA.

You might want to contact Jeff directly before ordering: headsuprc@yahoo.com
