New Brunswick Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

Hi,

I'm building a my first nitro heli. A NIB Venture 50 I bought off a member here. Anyway with the deal came a NIB Thunder Tiger Pro 50H engine. During mounting of the cooling fan to the engine....step 2-1 in the manual (follow link and look under Manuals & Support tab)

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...it-v50-JRP9015

I noticed the drive washer set is missing from the engine. As I'm not the original owner of this engine I don't know if it doesn't come with one? Or it was removed by the original owner. However the prop washer and prop nut were in place. My question is does the drive washer set have to be in place? The manual has a generic photo that shows one in place...but doesn't specifically mension the need. I found a build thread on RC universe with a O.S. 50SX-H, and although the pic was unclear, didn't seem to have one installed.

Personally I think I need one, and ordered one in case...but I thought I'd check with the pros!

Thanks,

Pat

Re: Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

Here is a picture of what I have.... In the other picture I have a drive washer (drive washer is the term used in my engine manual) from a O.S. engine

Re: Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

Based on what I see in the manual it looks like it's needed as a spacer. There likely won't be enough thread on the crank shaft to tighten down the fan/clutch assy if it's not there.

Re: Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

Here's a review on the ARF version of the Venture on the JR radio site:

http://www.jrradios.com/Articles/Art...ID=1360&Page=1

It gives details on how to reduce the runout of the fan/clutch assembly. It seems that the Venture does not use a tapered collet to align this assembly at the top nor the bottom from the manual.

Re: Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

You'l find out once you bolt it together when it comes to binding of the clutch assembley or alignment of the gears.

Rotomonkey13

Actually the fan/clutch assembly will bottom out on a tapered shoulder where the shaft diameter increases, but...... that leaves about a 1/4" space between the front of the engine and the fan/clutch assembly... this is why I question the whole setup.

Problem is the fan fits ridonkulously tight on the shaft. I think once I get it on there it's gonna be a real pain to get it out

Re: Engine and Fan/Clutch assembly

You likely do need that washer. There should be a wide surface at the engine end of the shaft so you want as much clutch / washer surface to contact that. Unless the shaft and clutch housing are a press fit which to my knowledge is not the norm then the washer is a must. You will likely find the washer has radius cut on the inner bore of it to fit over the wide taper near the motor
