Just picked up some #11 exacto blades at Staples 5 for $2.49. I thought it was a good price (I COULD be wrong) I seem to recall the last time i picked some up at RC Wings and Things he was charging $1 a blade.

Chris,

I buy them in boxes of 100 for $20 at the LHS. You can never have too many blades

Yes. No supplier nearby so we buy them along with other hardware from Microfasteners.com for 11.90US for a hundred plus some shipping, of course.

Curious what others have found regarding the relative "sharpness" of the X-Acto brand vs the no name 100 for $10 like Tower Hobbies etc.......
I find the X-Acto brand far superior albeit much more expensive so I buy both types and use the expensive ones for touchy jobs like edge trimming iron on plastic coverings......

I tried some "no name" blades and yes they seemed to not hold their sharpness as long. When I buy the 100 they are Hobbico brand and I find them on par with the official Exacto brand; at least for me.

I also have a box of 100 Hobbico's that are sharp enough for me... I go through a lot in my kids course's (coming up fast, better make sure I have enough blades! )

I've pretty much given up on the X-acto knife. I've been using the little Olfa snap-off disposable blade knives for some years now for a lot of stuff ... especially for trimming covering.

There are some very nice handles available, but the cheap ones work fine. The blades are dirt cheap, can be bought in bulk and are plenty sharp enough to trim film coverings accurately. Sharpening (changing a blade) is, literally, a snap.

A bonus is you can adjust the length of the blade to whatever's left in the handle. I find this especially handy for those long trim cuts along a TE or an LE or a fuselage side.

You have to apply a little common sense .. you're not going to hack through anything above about 1/2 inch but you shouldn't be trying to anyway.

I find even Exacto blades inferior by far to the single edge razor blades. I have been using those single edge razor blades for years now instead of exacto blades. I only use exacto blades when I have no choice.
