DLE 30 and spinner...

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hey all. I'm looking at a DLE 30 for a recently acquired Mustang 150. With a threaded crank, I know how to attach a spinner, but what do you do for the 4-bolt system used in the DLE 30? Is the crank threaded inside?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx, Deven

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

I use the prop jig and a drill press and drill the backplate to accept the bolts. The crankshaft is threaded inside so you can use a hex bolt to attach the spinner.

The 4 bolt system on the DLE30 is over kill.
The is an adapter available to convert the 4 bolt hub to a single threaded shaft.

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

Thx guys, there doesn't seem to be much detailed info out there compared to other engine brands. Now I have a way forward...
Thx again,

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

Take the drive washer that comes with the engine with the 4 small holes in it and lay it over the prop and spinner back plate. Through the center use a 10mm bolt to center everything and drill the 4 holes with a drill press. After the first hole shove a bolt through it to hold the assembly aligned for the other three holes. You might want to account for where you will feel comfortable flipping or hand starting the prop before drilling the first hole. The drive washer is actually a prop drill jig when used correctly.

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

If you go the 4 prop screw route you will find that the screws provided are about one quarter inch too short if the hub of your prop is 10 mm thick. (The Xoar 19X8 prop hub is 10 mm thick) In order to be on the safe side, I replaced the screws provided with Dubro 4X40 mm ones available at a LHS. They work fine and are the proper size and length. . . Cheers
p.s. by too short I mean they will not fully go through the rear drive washer (or whatever you call that part the screws go into behind the prop)

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

Thx guys, good ideas and much appreciated. I'll think I'll stick with the 4-bolt method after having tons of backfiring issues with a saito 115.(absolute pain in the butt 'till I got a bigger starter).
I ordered the drill-jig at the same time, but the drive washer method is a good idea G-cop!...never thought of it.
Thanks also John for the tip on the screws, seems kind of odd that they wouldn't just provide something guaranteed long enough that could be shortened as necessary...cost would be insignificant. Nickels and dimes...

Re: DLE 30 and spinner...

John, I checked mine, and with the bolts all the way through the rear drive washer, I've got 20-21mm of space for the spinner back-plate and prop hub.
The bolts themselves are 35mm long.
They must have gotten some feedback and made changes for the better.
...And there I was diss-ing the product before even checking it out completely, "my bad".
Dev.
