The manual refers to a shock absorber necessary for the break-in to prevent engine damage, but shows nothing in the diagrams that could remotely a "shock absorber".
Anyone know what the heck they're talking about?

Its the poor Chinese manual causing the confusion.
They probably mean to make sure the motor is properly and securely mounted before starting. Usually that means bolted to the airframe with the wings attached. The airframe will absorb and dampen the vibrations.

I will run my engines on a test stand first just to do a rough tuning and get familiar with the engine. Some say a gas engine should not be broken in on a test stand. Put it in the plane and fly.
I subscribe to that school. I just do the initial start up and run ( usually just one tank ) Then its into the plane to be abused

Just a note, The DL30 is a bit rough running in the beginning. It vibrates and shakes in the low mid-range in the beginning. After it gets some fuel though it and starts to loosen up, It gets smoother. They are great little motors.
