Stuck intake valve

When I got my SAITO .90 3 cyl radial one of the intake valves was stuck open. I oiled it and played with it a little and now it works. I have run the engine a couple of times and I took a couple of valve covers off for a look and no oil. I have had more than eight engines apart this year and as I recall none of them had oil in the valve covers. I was wondering if I should run the crank case vent through all the valve covers before venting it overboard.

Re: Stuck intake valve

Hey Kip I just remove the covers and give the rockers and valves all a good dose of 3in1 machine oil then reinstall. Once the motor is being flown enough oil from the fuel will eventually get up there, not alot but enough.
I also like to periodically remove the covers and clean everything up with Q-tips then the 3in1 and finally reinstall the covers.

Re: Stuck intake valve

Maybe type of oil as something to do with it.
WD40 and other similar oils do dry up.
3 in 1 oil and similar grade oils are different
lubricants.
A son who is a machinist did point this out to me once.

Re: Stuck intake valve

Yes I know that WD40 dries gummy and I know that Canadian Tire Silicone spray freezes at -10C ( you are not allowed to ask how I found that out). What about my idea to vent the crankcase vent through the rocker boxes.

Re: Stuck intake valve

No Kip, then you will have too much oil in the top end......also the crankcase vent should remain exactly what it is intended for, a crankcase vent nothing more.
Your valves and rockers will be fine just the way they are.

Re: Stuck intake valve

Great advise Bill. I have run a number of 4 stroke engines and found that it does take a bit of break in running to loosen up a bit to get the oil into the top end. I like the 3 in 1 oil idea for new engines. It certainly won't do anything but help it!

I personally don't think it's a good idea to vent the crankcase into the rockers. Besides too much oil in the rockers, sometimes the oil that is blown out the vents can be a somewhat grungy and you certainly don't want to be blowing this into the brand new rocker assy!

Just run the engine, for the first few runs, slightly on the rich side and it will care for itself. All the best with your radial engine. Must be sweet running and sounding for sure.

I just love the sound of a multi-cylinder 4 stroke engine! I have a brand new OS 1.60 flat twin that is yet to be fired up. Soon I hope!
