which mode to start with?

Hey guys,

I currently have a RTF that has a Mode 2 3ch transmitter so, throttle on left, rudder and elev on right. I don't think I can change it with this particular model.

I'm just wondering for when I get a 4chnl plane will this give me issues having then the current rudder position changed to the ailerons on the new mode 2 transmitter?

Thanks,

DK

Re: which mode to start with?

Well I certainly know that I can't switch back and forth with helis (don't fly planes), messes me up so much...

You will be just fine with the switch to 4 channel. right now you have the primary roll control (rudder) on the right stick.

With the 4 channel you will still have primary roll control on the right stick, it will be ailerons then.

The main change will be using left stick (rudder) on the ground for steering, it will be fairly easy to get used to that one small change. You will still "steer" the airplane in the air with the right stick.

You will also be able to use rudder on the left stick to complement ailerons for coordinated turns.

Re: which mode to start with?

Many of the top precision aerobatic pilots fly with throttle and aileron on the left stick and rudder/elevator on the right stick. It makes rolling type of maneuvers somewhat easier. The other bonus is that once you have transitioned to a 4+ channel plane nobody will ask to fly your plane because very few guys fly that mode!! LOL

Re: which mode to start with?

Hi Dale ..... as already stated .... you should be able to move into true Mode 2 without a whole lot of difficulty .... I'm guessing right now you have a 3Ch "Training" type aircraft which when in flight .... moving the rudder - changes the "Yaw" and the airframes design induces the "Roll" effect which helps you to complete a turn ( it may not seem a big deal now but as you move on to faster ... non forgiving type planes you will need to know) ..... moving the rudder control to the right side and adding aileron (roll) control to the left that turns are pretty much done in the same manner ..... but the turn is no longer co-odrinated ... next time you are at your field see if you can spot it ..... watch an airplane ..... flying at relative low speed and in a turn and check the difference in height between where the prop is and the tail section .... the airplane will appear to be dragged around the turn rather than flying straight through it.

Anyway ..... once you make the jump ..... don't forget about that rudder ..... it is a very useful control .... crosswind landing as an example .....

Have a look here for a good description of Mode(s) .... http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/rc-...ter-modes.html

and while you are surfing around ...... stop by .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_...wing_aircraft)

it makes no difference the aircraft size ..... they all share the same basic properties .....

Have fun .....
