Re: Banning Turbines
We had a grass fire at the field in my old club that was started by a model rocket. The fire started to spread pretty good, the municipal fire dept came and promptly got their fire truck stuck in an alkali patch. Fortunately there was a Hutterite colony a couple kliks down the road. They noticed the smoke and a bunch of them came over and put the fire out.

Re: Banning Turbines
It was a 40 sized trainer that was "the beginning of the end" of RCFCBC which at one point was the largest and oldest flying field in western Canada. With turbines it's the " I don't like something new, different, whatever...." I can remember not long ago when people were freaking out over 3D and hovering over the runway, etc.
I suggest that as a group you work with the club, not just the executive, and slowly help them to become familiar with turbines. Demonstrate safety procedures, etc. Take your time... It'll come around PaulD

Re: Banning Turbines
As Paul and I have said in the past we will come up and help with the easing in of turbines as well we just need a heads up and do some planning. I used to be a member of that club.

Re: Banning Turbines
Having moved to Kelowna a month before the big fire, I can understand the sesitivity to risk there. I understand the club moved from its spot on 33 but not sure of their new location. I am back in southern Ontario now and no one here is remotely familiar with that type of scenario. I have seen the pit and runway turbine fires but I haven't seen any postings of crash fires away from the strip. Is it a risk? Is there history they are concerned about?
As for noise, put 'em next to an unbalanced edf or record the audio of our stryker battles - they will love your turbines.

Re: Banning Turbines
That's a good question. Our practise at the club is to run a maximum 500' ceiling, but who really knows how high that is anyway. Our policy when guys are flying is to announce, "full scale approaching" when an airplane enters the space around our airfield and any airborne pilots are supposed to drop to 200-300' max. It happens that we are close to the down wind leg when the wind is blowing in a certain direction. There are also a lot of student pilots doing circuits and touch and goes with the full scale.
There are only a couple guys that fly the occassional glider. To date to my knowledge it hasn't been a problem, so gliders aren't banned as such but flying high is discouraged. IMAC flying at our club isn't banned as such, but high manouvers become a little difficult to practise. It seems the members today have a lot more common sense and believe in practising the self policing model for the good of the club. There was great discussion when Nav Canada got involved because we are just outside the so called controlled zone. When we got the incident reports, the report stated the height of the full size was 450 feet. Some club members wanted to argue that "he shouldn't have been there anyway". Quote from Nav Canada, "and he has every right to be there". This so called 1000' ceiling is a myth that has pepetuated itself. The short story is "the full size has the right of way in all cases". The problem is you can't ban stupidity!
