Turbine Powered Avro Arrow

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hi guys

Im not a jet guy myself, but Im looking for someone with a big turbine powered Avro Arrow. There is potentially something VERY BIG happening here in Canada, and a flying model of the Arrow may be a huge part of this. I cant say exactly what that is yet until if and when it becomes official.

Does anyone have one that is flying? If so, would you please contact me.

Thanks

Arrow

G'day Mike, Heres an RCC thread on the Arrow from a while back- https://www.rccanada.ca/bb/viewtopic.php?t=86

Also checkout the Action Hobbys web site- http://www.actionhobby.ca//list.cfm?CID=13

And If you are interested TJT Canada - http://www.TJT.bz can also supply custom models of any size and specification built to order and RTF for film, static or hobby etc.

All the best-

Arrow

Everytime I hear someone mention the Arrow I start to drool... It must be one of the most awesome aircraft ever designed.
My very own large 1/7 or 1/6 scale turbine version would just be about just as much excitment as I could handle flying jets I reckon. Certainly would be like the Everest of R/C jets eh!

The Arrow at Action Hobbies is 1/5th scale which means quite big.
Talking with Doug the owner on Mon. they are switching to 30 lb. thrust turbines. They have tryed ducted fan with a lot of engineering and cannot get enough thrust. Hence the turbines will go in. It is part of the Avroe project in Calgary and there is a Jetliner and my Clunk all in 1/5th scale. The Arrow has flown but it is a bit dodgey and way under powered.
I am hoping to be done also by the summer so we can all fly together.
John.

Hi guys - Name's Doug from Action Hobby in Calgary - just got word about the post on our Arrow - thought I should comment.

The 1/5 Arrow is 16.5 ft long, 10 ft wide, weighs 100 lbs and has a wing loading of 35 oz. Has two ten inch ducted fans with 8 inch tailcones.

As we were unable to buy 10" fans we built our own. The first fan design yielded some 85 mph velocity and was enough put 30 ft of air under the wheels for the length of the runway, but not with quite enough speed for trim flight and a go-around.

The fans have since been redesigned and testing now shows a static exit velocity of some 125 mph. (while generally slower by 5" fan standard its quite a blast of air out of two 8" holes)

We remain confident this first plane will fly on ducted fans as intended - but we also have a second airframe underway that would be dedicated solely to turbines.

Thanks for your interest........

Arrow

Doug,
You certainly have an amazing Arrow there! You have definietly caught the interest of a lot of R/C jet modellers here in Canada man!
Have ever built a smaller ducted fan version?
Myles

Myles

Only the 1/8 scale (10 ft long) ducted fan Arrows we used in filming the CBC Movie - sorry, we didn't have time to do detailed plans nor have we ever considered production kits.

Did you happen to see our other jet project while on our website - we have a 19.5 ft span Avro Jetliner (under projects - museum) - check it out at www.actionhobby.ca

Although like our Arrow, it too is 1/5 scale - its bigger - much bigger........

Doug

Was trying to keep the guys informed on Arrow. I was going to take a couple of pictures but maybe you can post them here. See you in a couple of days.
