Re: My first autorotation with a crash

RCcanuck here is a little tip the guys told me on your practice runs really try to listen for the blades to start to make that flapping noise on the way down that is key, your approach looked good you just did not gather enough head speed on the way down it is almost there it takes alot to shut it off.i am just about to try my first inverted auto.

Re: My first autorotation with a crash

that is a great idea one of the guys at our club stood beside me and gave me a few helpers as i took a few practice runs at it and i nailed my first one two days later i blew my 6 cell battery right out of the heli and proceeded to auto in and one more time do to engine failure so i was glad to of learnt them and i bet as soon as you learn one you will spend tanks just doing them they are alot of fun i do one every flight at the end cheers.

Re: My first autorotation with a crash

Nice. Have you practiced your 3 foot autos? Take it up a foot, hit hold get a feel for headspeed and how it settles. When perfect go to 2 ft. Then 3 ft. You are looking for perfect one shot landings every time. That is what you will need when you flare.

Another nice little trick is to bump your idle in throttle hold a smidge, just enough to keep your blades turning. This will give you a little more time to perfect things and a little more hang time at the end. Once it gets easy you just keep cutting that idle further down until it is fully disengaged.

Just going for it gets expensive pretty quick. You can also modify your 'normal' curve so that the bottom section is essentially idle (auto) but you still have a little power when you blow it and lose headspeed. This will give a nicer transition than punching out and help you nail that perfect approach, flair, and settle without the expense.

Looking good though, they get very addicting.

Re: My first autorotation with a crash

I'm on vacation all next week, I'd be happy to come down and coach you a little. The one you did in the vid looked real good right up until the end. You came into positive pitch just a bit early, and bled all your head speed off before you were close to the ground!

I can bring my laptop and phoenix too so you can try in there. Phoenix I've found to be quite accurate for autos. I know in RealFlight G4.5 there was enough hangtime that I could do piroflipping autos all day long blindfolded and still have hangtime at the bottom. Not too realistic.

Having a good accurate sim might go a long way to helping you nail it next time around.

Anyway, say the word, and I'll drive on up there for a day and we can hang!

Doh!

Also try to kill some of that forward speed a little earlier. The breaking effect also puts energy back into the rotors
