Shearwater R/C Flyer's

After a long shut down, (post 9/11), the Shearwater Flyer's R/C club is on it's way to commence flying once again. We're hoping to be fully operational by early March. We have unfettered access to the now deactivated main runway at Shearwater, which is separated from the Heliport, by security fencing. Featuring 10,000 foot by 200 foot runway, with intersections, tons of pit space, parking, etc. It's a MAAC Club, and although it's a CF Personnel Support sanctioned Club, we are allowed 50% civillian members. We've also been allowed to honour the MAAC regulations regarding visitors. Long story short, if you're looking to fly your huge jet, scale warbird, aerobat, heli, or glider, then we've just the locale. We have club trainers and radios, so members can receive training to the MAAC Wings level, with no big outlay for aircraft/gear! We also have agreement with the Shearwater Aviation Museum, for use of a conference room, for meetings, and the setup of a Real Flight 6 Sim room, with projector and large screen, for training. We're looking forward to a great flying year, and will announce our first open fun-fly, as soon as we're fully up and running. Hope to see lots of people come to visit!

Re: Shearwater R/C Flyer's

As a former Sherwater Flyer who also fought hard to get back into Shearwater post 9/11before being posted to Ottawa, this is excellent news. I look forward to droping in one weekend and seeing old freinds this summer during our summer vacation in Halifax.

Re: Shearwater R/C Flyer's

Not yet, we're working on it, remember, we're deailing with military paper process, so it's a bit slow and tedious. Membership will be $60.00 for individuals, and $80 for a family membership. We've already spoken to MAAC, and will be working under MAAC sponsorship, so any MAAC member will be able to attend as a guest. We're only allowed 50% civillian membership, but as the military numbers grow, we'll add civillian members. Hopefully April-May timeframe we'll be set up, and have an open invitational fun-fly, but really, any weekend that we're flying, guests will be more than welcome.

Re: Shearwater R/C Flyer's

Fox, wow, cool pool. I spent time up there as a kid, lived in Bonnyville, and was an Air Cadet at Cold Lake. Did my glider training there, on a Berg Falcon. Wonder if there's still the tire tracks I left on the fairway of the golf course when I couldn't make it back to the runway. Then Wing Commander almost got clipped as I was landing, he wasn't overly happy about the whole event!

Re: Shearwater R/C Flyer's

Interesting. Never thought there would ever be model flying there again.

I was a member at the disolving of the club back then. Never did find a suitable flying site. Think I still have a few Shearwater R/C Flyer decals.

Re: Shearwater R/C Flyer's

I have a turbine jet that i will be maidening this spring and I was thinking about the possibility of bringing it there to maiden if that would be ok. From what I have heard, it is an awesome location for flying.
