it is alot easier to replace the hole thing as there are a bunch of little pieces in there that will come out for sure..

Have a look at the Traxxas diagram:

Remove the three screws that hold the unit to the motor.
Remove the remaining screws that hold the black plastics pieces together.
Pull the case apart.
Remove the gears.
Remove the two screws that hold the motor to the plastic.

Its not a difficult job really.
