why hide it?

I was just curious, when I am having a discission with someone here on RCC I usually hit their "profile" button to see who I am speaking to. I am amazed that many guys dont fill out any of the info, not even where in the country they are located, and more leave their other stuff like occupation blank.

Just think that it is odd "we" are kinda supposed to be friends and get to know one another here on the board but a lot of guys dont even want you to know what province they come from?

I kinda understand about occupation being blank. When online, it is always prudent to give as little info about oneself when available to the world. Yeah I know it sounds paranoid but personal info is useful to a lot of people. I don't think people are blocking info from the folks here as much as from the outside world. Heck, even the mailing lists off this site are of value to someone so it's best to use a non-primary account if you have pone.

That being said, basic location would be a benefit; especially when guys/gals are selling stuff or if they need help with something.

Just, of course, an opinion

Bob

Nuker,
Hey, we are all entitled to our opinions no problem!

Call me naive, but telling people that my name is Andrew Coholic, that I live in Kirkland Lake and I am a woodworker by profession wont get them into my Visa account Nothing that anyone cant get from the phone book (and more, like my complete address, etc)

I truly like to know where guys are, and what they do - just find it interesting to see what kind of people this hobby draws in and what we all do, and where we are located.

That being said, I understand some people like to remain private too, but there isnt any real sensitive stuff on the profile.

I was just curious, thats all.

I hear what you are saying Andrew but knowing your profession is yet another useful tidbit where "human engineering" is involved. Yes the phonebook yields your name and address and postal code. Using even one piece of additional info could get someone more information and so on and so on.

Unfortunately this happens all too frequently; especially since the internet permeats more and more. Tons of people give their life story and details they would never give to a stranger on the phone or in person, on their personal websites. I was just commenting that lately more people are being cautious.

Please understand that what a planer or bisquit joiner is to you profession wise, this kinda stuff is to me (see I manged that without saying what I did for a living... didn't I?? ).

I try to spread awareness where and when I can with the hope that folks will make an informed decision regardless of what that decisions is

Sometimes it's good to be a little paranoid

Bob

ps Darn, didn't mean to get on a soapbox, sorry about that but I still think we should state what general area we are from

City and Province should be the very minimum that people would be comfortable with. It helps with perspective when people read their posts.

I tell ya, though.....the high Canadian content here makes it more comfortable place to hang around. Far fewer looney tune cases with internet access (if ya know what I mean...)
