hiya guys
i`m only new here and to spads in general, and although i am going to build one soon(a buhor i think) i cant yet..
but i have been thinking, this might be a little weird but i was just wondering if anyone has built a large enough scale spad to use a whipper snipper moter (i think you call them strimmers over there)
just a weird thought (i seem to have more than my share of then according to the wife
i am really impressed by the planes i`ve seen here and hope to one day be able to show off one of my own
cheers

Welcome to RCCanada....how did you happen to find us?

The biggest coroplast plane I have seen is a 1/5 scale cub.
It did not fly too well. I think you lose the advantages of coroplast when you start getting into longer wingspans and built up structures.

It could possibly be done by someone willing to experiment....

hiya wayne
i found you guys quite by accident, i was surfing the web and found one of the spad sites, i`ve always loved r/c planes and they had a link to this forum.
i`ve been lurking for a week or so and learning a heap during that time, i thought i might introduce myself and see what you thought of my weird idea.
thanks for your thoughts on the matter, might have to look at the strength issue lol
cheers

Hello!

I have also been thinking about alarger scale SPAD. I guess it boils down to a few things...

overall weight vs wing area vs engine power

I assume you are going to use something like a 25cc to 35cc engine? That size engine seems to fly best (in my experience) with something in the 16 pound weight (for sport aerobatic flying) with a max wing loading of 25 to 35 ounces per square foot. So you are looking at something with a wing (assuming a rectangular wing) of about 80" span and about 18" chord.

If you can keep the weight down to 15 or 16 pounds, and keep it stiff enough not to have excessive flex there shouldnt be any reason why it cant be done.

You could use some foam for instance, in the wing to stiffen up the structure. Cut your ribs from 1/2" thick styrofoam and use a foam safe spray adhesive to put the works together. Even a built up box spar would be strong and very stiff. I see no reason not to combine some traditional building techniques with the newer coroplast/plastic stuff to suit your needs.

I've never even owned an engine larger than a .47...so I've got zero experience with larger Spads...but there is a lot of action in that direction:

Here's one of the coolest ones I've seen:

And then you have the big Car that showed up at Spadfest!

Those are some awesome links... I especially liked the cap!

I think ANYTHING is possible. Just becuase one guy didnt have sucess doesnt mean giant scale spads are not a possibility.

This hobby is so cool!

Now, when can I get started on my turbine powered spad....

"Coro-Reaper" anyone?!
