Do not respond to this email. I am wondering who else got it other than me. Someone is selling mailing lists of modelers e address's. Opening it won't get you. Clicking on the link it contains will. The link cannot be scanned. You will not see your name anywhere on the email. Looks benign. It's not.

email title: Don's Model Works Order Shipped

Hello. I wanted to let you know that I shipped your order yesterday.
We usually ship faster than this, but my grandfather (who lived here
with us) died on 8/17, and the days since then have been very busy
and stressful. Please accept my apology for the delay in shipping.

Thank you for buying from us. Please email me if you have any questions.

Thanks for having sharp eyes.

As a reminder to everyone, three things to keep in mind:
1) Anti-Virus software and the virus data files are current
2) Ditto for firewall software
3) Turn off "preview" in your mail package.

About 10-20% of my incoming mail is Phishing or Nigerian-styled, about the same number are virus e-mails like this one (doesn't ahve the e-mail but the link to the loader.) Lesser number are from people who just joined FaceBook or the other social forums that extract your Address Book's contents and fire off invitations.

No need to be afraid but just be suspicious of the un-expected e-mails that don't have your name or come from people that you've never heard of.

I've gotten into the habit of using my ISP's mail service to browse the mail prior to down-loading it. "Report as spam" is the button on the in-basket.

Like the parting line in the "Hill Street Blues" briefing room. "Hey! Let's be careful out there!"

Don's Model Works is a legitimate business. However, they did not send the message referenced above. It's a tactic being used by hackers to infect end users computers with trojans and/or viruses, most likely to turn the end users computer into a "zombie" computer for other uses.

The hackers use legitimate businesses in the from address to make it look "real".

There is no point in complaining to or notifying the legitimate business of this, as there is nothing they can do about it. It does not originate from their systems.

As always, be suspicious of unsolicited email such as this. Keep your anti-virus software up to date.

Regards,
...jim

Jim, I have to agree with you -- people tyr to get you to open the "magic amulet", which is where the e-mail portion of the anti-virus scanner comes in.

Also, contacting the send is still a good idea because there is the rare situation where a really stupid wannabe or script-kiddie has managed to hijack the server and is sending out e-mail from the actual legitimate mail address. Letting them know in a nice way is a courtesy that may result in more than you just haveing a "warm fuzzy" from doing a good deed.
