PAINTING A NEW BODY???

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Ok here it goes, I just purchased my first truck, a SavageX. I also purchased the ElCamino body for it due to the fact I am that old that I remember these cars\trucks too well, and thought it was too cool, and I purchased the proper paint to paint the underside.
I am looking for any tips or tricks to do this such as, do I do all my cut outs first (wheels, access holes, etc.), what is the best way to cut out. Is a dremel a choice? Can you paint grafix on the exterior of the body and if so, what needs to be done to protect? Sorry for all the lame questions, just done want to screw anything up. Thanks a ton.......
Cheers............Mikee

Hey Mike, dont cut anything out until the paint is nice and dry I use curved lexan scisors and a exacto knife to cut wheelwells etc... And a reamer for the holes. PLAN PLAN PLAN!! That is the biggest trick to complicated paint jobs. A friend of mine from highschool (Jeff Eveleigh) started XXX Main.com , check out their paintmasks, they are pretty cool and make compicated patterns much easier to produce. Here is a link:

Oh ya, and clean the inside of the body with soap and water very well before you start, grease from fingers can really mess things up

Post some pics when you are done!

TAKE YOUR TIME!

Don't worry if your first 2-3 coats of paint are so thin that they're still translucent. That's a good thing. Too much paint causes ugly runs! Resist the temptation to hit a spot twice without letting it dry in between.

TAKE YOUR TIME!!

And have fun!

P.S. As someone mentioned, wash the inside of the body first. Warm water and dish soap. Then dry it with a cloth that won't leave dust or fuz. There's a releasing agent on the plastic that helps it come out of the mold that will prevent the paint from adhering properly and you'll get chips.

Bob Dively masking Film

I use the Bob Dively mask for my car/truck bodies. Just brush it on and use a sharp # 11 blade (I don't use a handle) to remove unwanted material. I spray in the main colour to seal in my handpainted graphic's. Doing the graphics (alpha numeric characters) backwards was the hardest part of it.
