Dave Patrick Models??

Does anyone have any info on what has happened to Dave Patrick Models? There website is still up and running but the listings are a few years old now, to say the least!

I phoned the number listed on the site and was told via voice message that the line/number has been disconected and is no longer in service.

I just aquired a DPM Extra 330L which is for the most part in very good condition.....exceipt the cowel, which I wanted to replace with a new one but it seems they are no where to be found.

Would appreciate any input available as to whether they are indeed out of business or not .

Anyone have a DP 330L cowel they would part with? I know its a long shot but ya never know!

Thanks my friends.

Re: Dave Patrick Models??

Hi Gary,
DPM Models was bought out by Cermark last winter.
Cermark, at the Toledo show said that DPM models would go back into production. But no deffinate dates were given.

They said the SuperCub woud be the first with a tentative fall release.
Then they were hoping to make parts available again for the planes already in exhistence in winter 2008/2009.
Then by summer 2009 have some more of the old kits back in production.

I am also wanting a new cowl for my DPM Ultimate.

Hope this helps a little

Re: Dave Patrick Models??

I do appreciate the feed back on DPM. Well, hopefully I will eventually be able to get a cowl for the Extra 330L.

The person who owned the plane origionally has cut a huge area out of the bottom of the cowl probably to accomodate a gas engine. I am installing a Saito 1.80 which does NOT need the bottom cut out. I fear just leaving this gaping hole will cause too much drag wanting to do IMAC aerobatics.

I'm thinking of a temporairy fix, perhaps using some resin and fiberglass cloth to close up the hole. Won't look the best but it will be better than the parachute affect of just leaving it open.

Thanks again for the info. If you hear any news as to parts availability, please keep in touch.

Re: Dave Patrick Models??

Gary - I just had a quick look at the Fiberglass Specialties web site. They list some cowls for DP Cub and Ultimates but I don't see a cowl for the Extra. In any case it might be worth a call to see if they can help you. Just a thought.

Seems to me there were several Ultimate cowls listed under DPM so I hope they have what you need. Just wish there was an Extra cowl for Gary.

If it's going to (eventually) get tossed, use the good old standby-->duct tape <--to close the hole up (or if you don't want it to be too visible, clear packing tape).

Re: Dave Patrick Models??

I had asked for some suggestions in the "Wanted Other" forem in the classified secton as to repairs/replacement for the cowl. I got quite a number of replys. Putting together the suggestions, I was able to do an rather extrodinary repair job.

I used a sheet of thin windshield material cut to 1/4" larger than the hole and taped it on the outside of the cowl over the hole using 2" clear packaging tape. ( Did this after thouroughly washing inside of the cowl with Acetone!)

I then cut two pieces of 6 oz. figerglass matt, 1" larger all around than the hole. I mixed up a batch of resin and brushed a coat over the plastic material and into the lip. Then I soaked the first piece of matt in the resin and laid it in place using the brush to squeeze out any bubbles and to get the resin into the corners/edges of the hole. When satisfied with this, I did the same with the second piece. On top of the patch, I brushed on more resin and made sure it was completely flat and smooth.

I used the same procedure for the second hole on the side of the cowl and to close up a couple of 1/2" holes.

When setup and hardened, I removed the tape and the plastic hole covers. I couldn't believe how smooth the completed repairs looked. Not even a lip where the fiberglass met the edges of the holes.

There were just a few pin holes which I filled in with spot puddy but no other filler was needed and the job finished up perfectly.

All that remains to do now is to paint the repaired patches. Once painted I doubt it will be easy to tell where the repairs were done, it came out that good!

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and help. Much appreciated my friends.

Oh, the repairs turned out so well, I now can't see the need to spend $80 plus dollars for a new cowl, taxes and shipping. This is definitely a great way to do cowl repairs.
