CG Machine

Having not flown for a while I decided to build this CG machine.
It's not fancy but should do the trick.
Can you see anything that I should do to improve it?

Thanks.

Nice work! I like the adjustable width feature.

Re: CG Machine

That is some nice craftsmanship there buddy!

As Gord said, adjustable width is sweet!

All I can add is, find some soft, conforming, smooth, material for the wing beds, so you don't hurt the jig when the plane is installed.....

Re: CG Machine

- i would use thicker material for the wing beds and give them a airfoil shape.

- Place foam tape on the wing bedsso the wings won't slip.

Re: CG Machine

A C of G machine is VERY important WHEN it is used, but it is not really used all that often...

So I would suggest that it is made to be easily broken down and stored in a box that will not loose any pieces.

Re: CG Machine

Where it slides to adjust width is there anything that pins the cross pieces to the main legs or just friction?

I should put together something like this. I have an old TV stand with supports made to go in different positions on it but the whole thing takes up too much space. This could be tucked away when not in use.

Re: CG Machine

Just wondering if the balance point is mounted with bearings ? Sig RC made a CG balancer similar but pricey I thought at the time but the best balancer I have used to date. There is a weight limit but don't remember how much. The two uprights on the rulers are set at the balance point and the aircraft
has the leading edge of set up to this point. The balancing is done at the pivot point where there are ball bearings used for precision. this is your C o G point, on the wing. Once the pointers (or whatever you want to call them) are set then the 1/4 inch threaded couplers are moved to counterbalance the pointers. The width can be adjusted by sliding the base to adjust to different fuse widths. Very accurate system.

Re: CG Machine

Thanks for the input folks and I will make the changes. The slide is just friction. Pins would be a good idea.
I had some old airtool bearings so I just used them.
The whole thing could be made for $20.00 just using things that others are throwing out.
I get my wood from a small cabinet shop here and they are always throwing out small pieces.
